Chapter 14 - The Fake Marcus

The video looked real.
Marcus sat in our kitchen at home.
Same blue shirt he had worn three days earlier.
Same wedding ring.
Same tired crease beside his mouth.
“I believe my wife is experiencing paranoid delusions connected to her mother’s estate,” the video Marcus said calmly.
The real Marcus stood beside me in the courthouse hallway.
“I never said that.”
The recording continued.
“She has become dangerous to herself and others.”
I watched my husband’s face say words designed to erase my credibility.
The old version of me would have felt only betrayal.
The new version asked a different question.
“How?”
Rook answered.
“Halcyon built identity packages for years. Video, voice, signature, behavior.”
Marcus looked at him.
“You knew they could do this?”
“I knew they could fake transactions. Not live legal testimony.”
The emergency petition triggered the hidden prenup clause.
If a court found me incapacitated, temporary control of the Zurich trust passed to Marcus.
And if Marcus was legally represented by a verified digital identity—
Victor could control Marcus.
The marriage had not been the key.
Our identities were.
I laughed in the middle of the courthouse.
Marcus stared.
“What’s funny?”
“Victor spent five years making you look untrustworthy.”
“That does not narrow it down.”
“He wants me to reject you.”
Marcus went still.
The wedding instruction came back to both of us.
When Elena finally stops trusting me, tell her to check the vows.
My mother had known this moment would come.
Rook said, “We can fight the petition.”
“No.”
Marcus frowned.
“No?”
“We let them think it worked.”
His expression changed.
“Elena.”
“Victor wants Marcus to become temporary custodian.”
Rook understood.
“So we give him that.”
Marcus looked at me like I had lost my mind.
“You want to hand me the trust?”
“No.”
I looked at the fake video again.
“I want to hand it to the version of you Victor thinks he owns.”
We filed no immediate objection.
By evening, a temporary hearing was scheduled.
Then Eleanor called.
Her voice was shaking.
“Elena, Owen is here.”
“Where?”
“At my house.”
“Leave.”
“I can’t.”
A man took the phone.
Owen.
“You should come too.”
I closed my eyes.
“What do you want?”
“Mom finally found the thing Dad hid before he died.”
“What thing?”
Owen laughed softly.
“The original Halcyon ownership papers.”
Marcus stared at me.
Owen finished:
“And guess whose name is first?”
We hired two independent forensic teams to examine the fake Marcus video. Both reached the same conclusion.
The face was synthetic. The voice was synthetic. The room was not.
It was our kitchen.
Someone had filmed the empty room in high resolution from inside our house.
Marcus stared at the still image. “The angle is from above the pantry door.”
I remembered a smoke detector Victor’s contractor had installed after a renovation. We sent Rook’s people to retrieve it. Inside was a camera.
Five years of footage had been uploaded in compressed bursts to a remote server. Five years. Our wedding anniversary dinners. Fights. Holidays. Marcus making pancakes at midnight. Me crying after my mother’s birthday. Private conversations used as raw material to build convincing copies of us.
Marcus sat on the courthouse steps after we learned. “I brought them into our house.”
“You didn’t install the camera.”
“I signed the contractor.”
There it was again. His instinct to claim every consequence as proof of guilt.
I sat beside him. “Taking responsibility is not the same as making yourself the center of every bad thing.”
He looked at me. I had not forgiven him. But I was no longer willing to let Victor define him either.
