Chapter 9 - Marcus Finally Tells Me Everything

Marcus did not want me to open the file.

That was exactly why I did.

His face appeared on-screen.

Recorded two years earlier.

“I married Elena because Victor told me to.”

I felt the words physically.

Even though I already knew pieces of it, hearing him say it cleanly was different.

On-screen Marcus continued.

“I stayed because I loved her. Those are both true, and I know the second truth does not erase the first.”

The Marcus sitting across from me stared at the floor.

“I found the hidden prenup clause after our third anniversary. By then Victor was using it to threaten both of us. He said if I told Elena, he would release evidence making her mother look responsible for Charles Whitmore’s death.”

Eleanor whispered, “He had evidence.”

The recording continued.

“I transferred money from the Zurich accounts. I told myself it was temporary. I told myself I was tracing Owen. I told myself Elena would understand when I had answers.”

I shut the video off.

Marcus looked at me.

“You don’t have to finish it.”

“I do.”

“No. You already know I betrayed you.”

“That is not the same as hearing you admit how.”

I pressed play.

“I used Elena’s authorization token while she was asleep. I never stole money for myself. That doesn’t matter. I stole choice from her. I became exactly what I said I was protecting her from.”

My eyes burned.

I hated that he understood it now.

Understanding was not undoing.

When the video ended, I stood.

Marcus did too.

“Elena.”

“No.”

“I’m sorry.”

“I believe you.”

His face changed.

“That’s worse, isn’t it?”

“Yes.”

Because I believed he loved me.

And he had done it anyway.

Rook interrupted quietly.

“We found a pattern in Eleanor’s nine-million-dollar payment.”

Eleanor looked up.

The money had not gone to Victor.

It had been split across hospitals, schools, housing trusts, and private accounts over seven years.

All connected to one person.

Owen.

Marcus frowned.

“So Mom was funding him?”

Eleanor shook her head.

“I didn’t know.”

Rook pulled up surveillance records.

Owen had not been held captive for years.

He had been living under protection.

Expensive protection.

Victor had used Eleanor’s ransom money to build Owen a new identity.

Then Owen had joined him voluntarily.

“Why?” I asked.

Eleanor whispered, “Because he hated me.”

Marcus looked at her.

“Why would he hate you enough to help Victor?”

She started crying again.

“Because Victor made me choose.”

“Choose what?”

“Which son he would return.”

Marcus went still.

Eleanor looked at him.

“And I said your name.”

After the confession video, Marcus asked to speak to me alone. I almost refused. Then I remembered my new rule: I did not owe anyone forgiveness, but I did owe myself information.

We stood in a narrow laundry room because it was the only place Rook had cleared.

Marcus leaned against a dryer. “I never spent any of the money.”

“I know.”

“I thought that would matter.”

“It matters legally.”

He nodded slowly. “Not personally.”

“No.”

He looked down at his wedding ring. “I kept telling myself I would explain when Owen was safe.”

“And if he never became safe?”

Marcus did not answer.

“That was the plan, wasn’t it? Keep lying until the lie became old enough to call history.”

His eyes filled. “My father used to say a delayed truth was still truth.”

“Your father was wrong.”

“Yeah.”

He took off his ring but did not hand it to me. That mattered too.

“I’m not asking what happens to us tonight,” he said.

“Good.”

“I’m asking you not to let Victor use what I did to decide what you do next.”

For the first time since dinner, he asked something of me that was not really about him.
