Chapter 19 - The Second Dinner

The dining hall still had a crack in one marble column from the first attack.

The hotel had covered it with flowers.

Rich people loved flowers over structural damage.

Victor sat at the same table where Eleanor had accused me of theft.

The original Halcyon charter lay in front of him.

Around him sat lawyers, private security, and three board members who looked like they regretted every life choice that brought them there.

“You came,” Victor said.

“I hate leaving a meal unfinished.”

Marcus almost smiled.

Victor looked at Owen.

“You disappoint me.”

Owen shrugged.

“Get in line.”

We placed our dissolution documents on the table.

Victor placed one finger on the charter.

“Founder veto.”

My lawyer said, “The veto applies only while all founding classes remain represented.”

“They do.”

“Celeste is in custody.”

“She is still a founder.”

“Charles is dead.”

“His heirs are here.”

Victor smiled.

“And I am here.”

I looked at the charter.

Three founders.

Three classes.

Something felt wrong.

My mother had told me not to save Palisade because she built it.

Not Halcyon.

Palisade came later.

I opened the original articles again.

Celeste Navarro’s name was first.

Charles second.

Victor third.

But the page numbering started at two.

“Where is page one?”

Victor’s smile disappeared.

There.

A question more dangerous than the answer he wanted me to accept.

Owen looked at the binding.

“Someone removed it.”

Victor stood.

“This meeting is over.”

Rook blocked the door.

“No.”

Victor’s security moved.

Raven Six moved faster.

The room exploded into shouting.

Marcus grabbed the charter.

Victor struck him and tore it back.

Owen tackled Victor against the table.

I saw something fall from inside the leather cover.

A folded sheet.

Not page one.

A letter.

Charles Whitmore’s handwriting.

Marcus saw it too.

He grabbed the paper.

Victor shouted, “Don’t open that!”

That was all the permission we needed.

Marcus unfolded it.

Charles had written:

IF VICTOR INVOKES THE FOUNDER VETO, HE HAS ALREADY FORGOTTEN THE MOST IMPORTANT DETAIL.

The next line made Owen laugh.

HALCYON NEVER HAD THREE FOUNDERS.

Victor stopped fighting.

Marcus kept reading.

THERE WERE FOUR.

A name appeared beneath Charles’s signature.

Eleanor Whitmore.

The dining hall doors opened.

Eleanor walked in wearing a hospital coat over her gown, one arm in a sling.

She looked at Victor.

“You should’ve made sure I died.”

On the way back to the hotel, Marcus asked me a question he had avoided all week.

“If we survive this, are you leaving me?”

I watched rain move across the car window. “I don’t know.”

He nodded. “I can live with that.”

“No, you can live without knowing. That’s different.”

He looked at me. “You’re right.”

Five years earlier, uncertainty would have terrified him. Marcus solved problems by controlling information, arranging outcomes, deciding which truth arrived when. Now he sat beside me and let the silence remain unresolved.

It did not restore trust. But it showed me change was possible.

At the hotel entrance, Owen caught up with us.

“If Victor gets arrested tonight, I want it on record that I’m taking Dad’s whiskey collection.”

Marcus frowned. “You don’t even drink whiskey.”

“I lost twenty years. I’m taking something expensive.”

“Take the boat.”

“Mom hates the boat.”

“Exactly.”

I shook my head. There were armed teams waiting upstairs, a criminal network trying to survive, and somehow the Whitmore brothers were fighting over a dead man’s hobbies.

Families were ridiculous even when they were dangerous.
