Chapter 3 - The Prenup Was a Key

Victor Sloane had been at our wedding.

He had stood behind Marcus during the ceremony and toasted us at the reception.

He had handled our prenup, the Whitmore estate, my mother’s probate file, and nearly every ugly legal problem Eleanor wanted to disappear quietly.

I had trusted him because everybody else did.

Rook clearly did not.

“Where is Sloane now?” he asked.

Eleanor folded her arms.

“I’m not his secretary.”

Rook looked at one of his operatives.

“Find him.”

Marcus turned to me.

“The prenup had a custodial clause.”

“I read the prenup.”

“You read the version Victor gave you.”

My stomach tightened.

He took out his phone and opened a scanned document.

Page forty-three.

A section I had never seen.

If I became incapacitated, missing, legally compromised, or subject to criminal investigation, temporary management of certain inherited assets could pass to my spouse.

Marcus.

I read it twice.

“You added this?”

“No.”

“You signed it.”

“So did you.”

“I never saw it.”

“I know.”

That answer made me look up.

“You knew?”

“Not when we signed. I found it last year.”

“And said nothing.”

He rubbed a hand over his face.

“I was trying to figure out why Victor cared.”

Eleanor said, “Because your mother was dangerous.”

I turned.

“You keep saying things like that and then refusing to explain them.”

She stared at me.

“Your mother ruined my husband.”

“Charles died of a heart attack.”

“No.”

Marcus whispered, “Mom.”

Eleanor ignored him.

“Charles discovered Celeste was moving money through private shelters. He confronted her. Two weeks later, he was dead.”

I looked at Rook.

“Is that true?”

He did not answer.

That scared me.

Eleanor walked toward me.

“Your mother disappeared the same week.”

“She died in a boating accident.”

“That’s what she wanted you to believe.”

Marcus stepped between us.

“Enough.”

Eleanor’s eyes sharpened.

“No, Marcus. You wanted truth? Here.”

She took out her phone and played an old audio file.

My mother’s voice filled the room.

“Charles, if you open that file, I will bury you with it.”

Then Charles Whitmore:

“Celeste, people are going to prison.”

My mother answered:

“Only if I fail.”

The recording ended.

I felt sick.

Marcus looked at me.

“I never wanted you to hear it like this.”

I stared at him.

“You heard it before we got married?”

He didn’t answer.

That was answer enough.

Rook’s operative returned from the hallway.

“Sloane is gone.”

Rook frowned.

“Gone where?”

“His car left the hotel six minutes before the lights went out.”

I thought about the forged identity package attacking Zurich.

Victor had known Raven Six was coming.

Which meant somebody had warned him.

Then Rook’s tablet chimed.

A new trust document had appeared in the Zurich vault.

Created eight years ago.

Signed by my mother three days after her funeral.

I pulled up the digital copy of the prenup I had stored in my own cloud drive. Page forty-three did not exist. My version went from forty-two to forty-four, and the numbering was perfect.

Rook looked over my shoulder. “Professional document substitution.”

Marcus said, “Victor controlled the signing room.”

I remembered it. A private conference room. Champagne. Eleanor complaining about flowers. Victor joking that nobody reads prenups until they hate each other. At the time I had laughed.

Now I wanted to break something.

“Who witnessed the signatures?” I asked.

Marcus looked at his mother.

Eleanor’s answer came slowly. “Victor’s paralegal.”

“Name?”

“Dana Cole.”

Rook typed it into his tablet. His brow tightened.

“What?”

“Dana Cole died eighteen months ago.”

Marcus frowned. “Car accident?”

“Apartment fire.”

The room got colder.

I looked at the altered document again. A hidden page was one thing. A dead witness was another.

Eleanor said, “You’re making connections that may not exist.”

I met her eyes. “That is exactly what people say when the connections are getting uncomfortable.”
