Chapter 12 - Something Nobody Would Throw Away

Daniel drove to the cemetery.
Rachel came with him.
Neither of them spoke during the first half of the drive.
Finally Rachel said, “What did Claire own that nobody would throw away?”
“Photos. Jewelry. Letters.”
“Her wedding dress?”
“Donated.”
“Lily’s baby things?”
Daniel’s hands tightened on the steering wheel.
“Most are in storage.”
“What about the grave?”
He looked at her.
Rachel continued.
“Claire knew you would never stop visiting.”
Daniel hated the thought immediately.
But he also knew Claire.
She loved puzzles. She hid Christmas gifts in places so obvious people ignored them.
At the cemetery, they searched carefully around the headstone without disturbing anything.
No hidden compartment.
No loose stone.
Then Daniel noticed the bronze flower vase attached to the base.
Claire’s mother had chosen it.
He unscrewed the bottom plate.
Inside was a tiny sealed plastic capsule.
Rachel stared.
“No way.”
Daniel’s hands shook as he opened it.
A microSD card fell into his palm.
They did not play it there.
They called Detective Vega.
Thirty minutes later, they sat in a police interview room while a forensic technician copied the card.
There were three files.
The first was audio only.
Claire’s voice.
Weak, breathy, unmistakable.
“If Daniel hears this, then Vanessa came back.”
Daniel covered his mouth.
Rachel looked down.
Claire continued.
“Vanessa and Michael took money from the Fairhaven Children’s Fund using my login. I confronted Vanessa. She said the board would believe the paperwork, not me.”
Then another voice entered the recording.
Vanessa.
You always needed people to think you were perfect, Claire.
Claire answered, “You stole from sick children.”
Vanessa laughed softly.
And you covered it. That was your choice.
Michael’s voice joined them.
“Enough. We got the money back. Nobody went to prison. Move on.”
Claire said, “I kept copies.”
The recording ended.
Daniel felt tears on his face and did not bother wiping them away.
The second file was a scan of bank records linking Michael to the returned funds.
The third file was labeled FOR DANIEL.
The technician opened it.
Claire appeared on video in a hospital room.
She was pale and thin, but her eyes were clear.
“Hi,” she said.
Daniel broke.
He had not heard her speak directly to him in eighteen months.
Rachel put her hand over his.
Claire gave a tiny smile into the camera.
“I hope you never see this. Because if you do, it means I was right to be afraid.”
She explained Vanessa’s obsession with control, her resentment, and the old fraud.
Then Claire said something Daniel did not expect.
“But listen to me. Do not turn this into revenge. Protect Lily. Tell the truth. Let the law do the rest.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
Claire looked tired now.
“One more thing. Vanessa knows about the trust because she once saw an early draft. She believes there is a clause that gives her access if she becomes Lily’s guardian.”
Daniel leaned toward the screen.
Claire shook her head.
“There isn’t. I changed it. But Vanessa doesn’t know that.”
Rachel whispered, “So she was chasing money she could never legally get.”
Claire’s final words came slowly.
“If Vanessa ever gets close to Lily, ask Lily about the song.”
The screen went black.
Daniel stared at it.
“The song?”
Rachel shook her head.
That evening, Daniel sat beside Lily on Margaret’s couch.
“Sweetheart, did Mommy have a song for you?”
Lily nodded instantly.
“The moon song.”
“Did Vanessa ever talk about it?”
Lily’s face changed.
“She got mad when I sang it.”
“Why?”
Lily hugged her rabbit.
“Because Mommy told me where the key goes.”
Daniel’s pulse jumped.
“What key?”
Lily pointed toward her stuffed rabbit.
May you like
“The one inside Bunny.”
