Chapter 3 - The Man in the Bedroom

The stranger wore a gray work jacket and held a clipboard.
Daniel leaned toward the laptop.
“Who is that?”
Rachel shook her head.
The video had no sound for the first few seconds. Then the man spoke.
“I still think this is too soon.”
Vanessa answered quietly. “It has to happen before she turns four.”
Daniel looked at Rachel.
“What has to happen?”
On the screen, the man opened the metal box from Lily’s closet.
Inside were documents.
He lifted one page toward the camera.
Daniel paused the video.
Rachel zoomed in.
At the top of the document were the words:
THE CLAIRE REED FAMILY TRUST.
Daniel stopped breathing.
Claire’s parents had created the trust years earlier. After Claire died, the money was placed under Daniel’s control for Lily’s future: education, medical care, housing, and eventually a protected inheritance.
Vanessa knew about the trust.
But she had never been given access.
Rachel read the blurred line under the title.
“Petition for modification of trustee authority.”
Daniel’s voice went flat.
“No.”
Margaret looked between them. “What does that mean?”
Rachel answered.
“It means somebody was preparing paperwork to change who controls Lily’s money.”
Daniel hit play.
The man lowered his voice.
“If he signs the updated estate package, you still need a triggering event.”
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“He’s exhausted. He signs what I put in front of him.”
Daniel felt sick.
A month earlier Vanessa had handed him a stack of insurance updates and household documents after dinner.
He had signed them while answering emails.
Rachel turned slowly.
“What did you sign?”
“I don’t know.”
“Daniel.”
“I said I don’t know.”
The shame in his own voice made him angrier.
Margaret touched his arm.
“Then we find out.”
The video continued.
The stranger asked, “And the child?”
Vanessa looked toward Lily, who was coloring on the floor.
“She’s becoming difficult.”
The man stiffened.
“That is not what I asked.”
Vanessa lowered her voice even more.
“She talks too much. She remembers too much. Daniel believes everything she says.”
The man closed the box.
“I’m not getting involved in anything criminal.”
Vanessa smiled.
“You already are.”
The video ended.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then the front door opened.
Daniel stood so fast his chair fell backward.
Vanessa stepped into the house carrying a small overnight bag.
She froze when she saw Rachel, Margaret, and the laptop.
Her gaze moved to the memory card reader.
Everything drained from her face.
Daniel walked toward her.
“Who is the man in Lily’s bedroom?”
Vanessa recovered quickly.
“A financial consultant.”
“At two in the afternoon? With papers from Claire’s trust hidden in my daughter’s closet?”
Her eyes sharpened.
“You went through my things?”
Rachel laughed once.
“Your things? They were hidden in a three-year-old’s room.”
Vanessa ignored her.
“Daniel, I can explain.”
“Then start with his name.”
She hesitated.
That was enough.
Daniel pulled out his phone.
“I’m calling the police.”
Vanessa’s confidence cracked.
“Don’t.”
“Why?”
“Because if you call them, you’re going to destroy something you can’t put back together.”
“What?”
She stared at him.
Then she said a name Daniel had not heard in over a year.
