Chapter 16 - The Cabin

Deputies moved in from three sides.

Daniel could do nothing but listen to the radio.

“Front door breached.”

“Adult female running rear.”

“Child located.”

Daniel’s knees nearly gave out.

Then the sentence he needed:

“Child is safe.”

He covered his face.

Rachel cried beside him.

Ten minutes later, an officer led Lily out wrapped in a gray blanket.

Daniel ran to her.

“Daddy!”

He dropped to his knees and caught her against him.

“I’m here. I’m here.”

She clung to his neck.

“I told them you would come.”

“I will always come.”

He checked her face, her arms, her hands.

She looked frightened but unharmed.

A medic examined her and confirmed the same.

Nicole Ames was arrested inside the cabin.

Vanessa had fled through the back woods.

Police dogs tracked her for nearly a mile before losing the trail at a service road.

Daniel did not care.

Not at first.

Lily was safe.

That was enough.

At the hospital, Lily told a child-interview specialist that Nicole had picked her up from Susan’s house after saying “Daddy had a surprise.”

Vanessa had been waiting in the car.

At the storage unit, Vanessa tore through Claire’s letters and screamed when she could not find “the original recording.”

Then she drove them to the cabin.

Nicole had started arguing with her.

“She said she only wanted money,” Lily explained. “Vanessa said nobody gets to leave.”

Daniel’s blood ran cold.

Nicole eventually agreed to cooperate.

Her statement filled in the missing pieces.

She had met Michael years earlier through debt collectors. He paid her to tell Vanessa when Claire was alone at the hospital and when Daniel left the room.

Nicole insisted she never altered Claire’s medication or harmed her medically.

Detectives found no evidence that she had.

But she had told Vanessa about Claire’s legal meetings.

That was how Vanessa knew about the final estate changes.

“Why help them now?” Vega asked.

Nicole looked exhausted.

“Michael said Vanessa only needed old documents from the storage unit. He said the child would be returned in an hour.”

“And you believed him?”

Nicole started crying.

“No. I believed the money.”

Daniel felt no sympathy.

The next morning, police found Vanessa.

She had broken into an empty vacation trailer three miles from the cabin.

When officers entered, she surrendered without a fight.

By afternoon, she was charged with violating the protective order, child abduction, conspiracy, fraud-related offenses, and evidence tampering. Additional charges were still under review.

Michael faced his own list.

Daniel thought that would feel like victory.

It did not.

It felt like exhaustion.

That night, Lily slept in a hospital bed while Daniel sat beside her.

She woke at 2:00 a.m.

“Daddy?”

“I’m here.”

“Is Vanessa going to be my mom again?”

“No.”

“Ever?”

“Never.”

Lily nodded.

Then she whispered, “Good.”

Daniel held her hand.

After a minute she asked, “Can Mommy still see me?”

Daniel looked toward the dark window.

“I don’t know exactly how that works.”

Lily considered this.

“I think she can.”

“Why?”

“Because she left Bunny a key.”

Daniel smiled through tears.

Then Lily said something that wiped the smile away.

May you like

“Vanessa said she had another key too.”
