Chapter 9 - Vanessa’s Brother

Vanessa had never told Daniel she had a brother.
Not once.
She had described herself as an only child whose parents were both dead.
Detective Vega found the truth in under ten minutes.
Michael Carter was forty-one, lived in Indiana, and had a long record of financial scams involving vulnerable adults, insurance claims, and forged signatures.
His last known employer was a private “document consulting” company that no longer existed.
Rachel stared at the screen.
“So Vanessa marries Daniel, Michael helps manufacture incapacity, and then they go after Lily’s trust.”
Vega held up a hand.
“That is a theory. A strong one. But still a theory.”
Daniel leaned back.
“How much is the trust worth?” Vega asked.
Daniel hesitated.
“About four-point-two million.”
Elena covered her mouth.
Rachel whispered, “There it is.”
Vega’s expression stayed neutral.
“Money can be motive. It is not proof.”
Daniel’s phone buzzed.
A text from an unknown number.
YOU’RE MAKING THIS WORSE FOR LILY.
Another message followed.
DROP IT AND I’LL DISAPPEAR.
Daniel showed Vega.
She photographed the screen.
“Do not reply.”
A third message arrived.
ASK YOURSELF WHY CLAIRE NEVER TOLD YOU THE WHOLE TRUTH.
Daniel’s hand tightened.
Then a photo appeared.
Claire, years younger, standing outside a Chicago office building with Vanessa and Michael Carter.
All three were smiling.
On the back wall was the logo of the nonprofit where the money had disappeared.
Daniel looked at Vega.
“What if Claire was involved too?”
Rachel snapped, “Daniel.”
“I’m asking.”
“You’re letting Vanessa into your head.”
“Claire kept this entire history from me.”
“She was dying.”
“That doesn’t erase it.”
Vega interrupted.
“Both things can be true. Claire may have kept secrets. Vanessa may still be committing crimes. Don’t force the facts into one clean story.”
It was the first thing anyone had said all day that made Daniel feel grounded.
That evening, child protective services interviewed Lily with a trained specialist.
Daniel waited in another room, unable to hear the questions.
When Lily came out, she ran to him.
“Daddy, can we sleep at Grandma’s?”
“Yes.”
“Not our house?”
“Not tonight.”
She relaxed immediately.
That hurt more than anything.
At Margaret’s house, Daniel gave Lily a bath, read her two books, and let her choose three stuffed animals for bed.
Before he turned off the light, she touched his face.
“Are you mad at me?”
His heart broke.
“Never.”
“I told.”
“I’m glad you told.”
“Vanessa said telling makes families break.”
Daniel swallowed hard.
“No. Hurting people breaks families. Telling the truth helps us fix what can be fixed.”
Lily thought about that.
Then she nodded.
“Okay.”
He kissed her forehead.
At 11:40 p.m., Daniel’s phone rang.
Detective Vega.
“We found Michael Carter.”
“Where?”
“Your house.”
Daniel stood up.
“What?”
“Your alarm company reported a forced basement entry. Patrol units arrived and found him inside.”
Daniel’s pulse exploded.
“Was he arrested?”
“Yes.”
“What was he doing?”
Vega’s answer made Daniel go cold.

“He was trying to burn a box of photographs in your furnace.”
