Chapter 10 - The Room Victor Hid

Adrian stared at Mateo.

“My father died eighteen years ago.”

“I know.”

“He was not involved in Victor’s fraud.”

Mateo laughed bitterly.

“He created the structure.”

Ernesto looked between them.

“Dad, what are you saying?”

Mateo lowered the shotgun.

“Sit.”

Nobody did.

Mateo nodded as if he expected that.

“Cole Meridian wanted riverfront land before the city rezoned it.”

Adrian knew that history.

His father had called it visionary acquisition.

Mateo called it something else.

“Families were pressured out. Buildings were condemned using inspectors who got paid. Shell nonprofits bought parcels so Cole wouldn’t appear on deeds.”

Adrian’s stomach tightened.

“Victor ran legal.”

“Yes.”

“My father?”

“Authorized it.”

“No.”

Mateo crossed the room and opened a rusted cabinet.

He placed an old ledger on the table.

William Cole’s signature.

Adrian knew it instantly.

Payment codes.

Inspectors.

False charities.

Everything.

His father had signed.

Ernesto whispered:

“Your dad was bad?”

The simplicity cut deeper than accusation.

Adrian touched the ledger.

“At first, yes.”

Mateo looked at him.

“Then he tried to stop.”

Adrian looked up.

“When?”

“After one eviction fire killed a family.”

Adrian remembered the fire.

He had been nineteen.

His father stopped sleeping for weeks.

Mateo continued.

“He told Victor to unwind the structure.”

“Victor refused.”

“Yes.”

“So my father planned to expose it.”

“Yes.”

“And died before he did.”

“Yes.”

Adrian’s chest tightened.

Heart attack.

Family history.

Natural causes.

Maybe not.

Mateo opened another file.

Victor’s pharmaceutical payments.

Private physician.

Cardiac medication substitutions.

Adrian looked away.

Not grief.

Anger too clean for tears.

Marcus asked, “Why hide for twelve years?”

Mateo looked at Ernesto.

“Because Victor threatened Sofia and the baby.”

Ernesto frowned.

“Me?”

“Yes.”

“You left because of me?”

Mateo’s face broke.

“I left so you could grow up.”

The boy stared at him.

No hug now.

That hurt Mateo more.

Adrian turned pages.

One note from William.

VICTOR IS NOT ACTING ALONE.

Below it:

E. COLE.

Adrian froze.

His mother.

Eleanor Cole.

Dead fifteen years.

He stared at Mateo.

“What did my mother do?”

Mateo’s face changed.

“She was not with Victor.”

“Then why is her name here?”

“She was the second investigator.”

Adrian’s pulse kicked.

“What?”

“After your father died, she kept digging.”

Adrian remembered Eleanor after William’s funeral.

Quiet.

Drinking less, not more.

Locked office doors.

Then three years later:

Accidental overdose.

Adrian looked at the ledger.

“Victor killed her too.”

Mateo did not answer.

A phone buzzed.

Sofia’s number.

Ernesto lunged for it.

Mateo stopped him.

Adrian answered on speaker.

Video call.

Sofia appeared tied to a chair.

A bruise along her cheek.

Ernesto made a sound.

“Mom!”

Victor stepped into frame behind her.

Calm.

Perfect suit.

“Bring me Ernesto.”

Mateo went white.

Victor smiled into the camera.

May you like

“Or Sofia dies where William Cole should have died eighteen years ago.”

CUT.
