Chapter 14 - Eleanor Cole

Adrian’s mouth went dry.
“What about my birth?”
Sofia sat slowly.
She had a bruise on her cheek and rope marks on both wrists.
Still, her voice stayed steady.
“I worked nights at Cole headquarters before Ernesto was born.”
“You knew Eleanor.”
“Yes.”
“How?”
“She came in after everyone left.”
“After her funeral?”
“Yes.”
Adrian shut his eyes.
Nothing about the sentence felt real.
Sofia continued.
“She used an alias. Sarah Reynolds.”
“Her maiden name.”
“Yes.”
“She recruited you.”
“Eventually.”
“For records.”
“Payroll. medical vendors. shell companies.”
Adrian stared.
“And my birth?”
Sofia looked toward Daniel.
He shook his head.
He did not know either.
“She found a private trust.”
“What trust?”
“Created the year you were born.”
“For me?”
“No.”
The answer landed hard.
“For another child.”
Adrian went still.
“Who?”
“She never told me the name.”
Mateo opened another envelope from the pumping-station box.
Eleanor’s handwriting.
IF VICTOR IS CAUGHT, ADRIAN GETS THIS.
Adrian broke the seal.
Inside:
Birth records.
Trust papers.
Photograph of Eleanor holding a newborn.
Not Adrian.
The date was six months before Adrian’s birth certificate date.
He stared.
“Who is the baby?”
No one answered.
A phone buzzed.
Victor’s attorney had transmitted a police interview request.
Daniel ignored it.
Adrian kept reading.
Eleanor’s letter:
Adrian, if you are seeing this, Victor is finally exposed. That means I failed to come home.
His throat tightened.
I need you to understand that William and I disappeared because Victor’s network reached farther than we knew.
We let you believe we were dead because the people watching us were also watching you.
Adrian squeezed the paper.
Then:
There is one truth Victor never learned.
The child he was searching for was never you.
Adrian stopped.
Ernesto looked up.
The letter continued.
The child was hidden among the river families under another surname.
Sofia’s face changed.
Mateo whispered, “No.”
Adrian looked at them.
“What?”
Sofia stood.
“We need to leave.”
“Why?”
“Now.”
“Why?”
Before she could answer, Daniel’s phone lit up.
A delayed message from Victor’s seized server.
One video file.
Sofia.
Captured earlier.
Victor behind her.
But this was recorded before the hostage call.
Victor said:
“Bring me Ernesto.”
Then he leaned closer to the camera.
“Because the boy isn’t Mateo’s.”
Everyone froze.
Ernesto looked at his father.
Mateo’s face collapsed.
Victor continued:
May you like
“He is the last piece Eleanor hid from us.”
CUT.
