Chapter 15 - The Child Everyone Forgot

Ernesto backed away from Mateo.
“No.”
Mateo’s eyes filled.
“Ernesto—”
“No.”
Sofia moved toward him.
He backed away from her too.
Adrian hated Victor for reaching into the room even in handcuffs.
Hated him more because the fear on Sofia’s face said there was truth somewhere inside the lie.
Adrian held up Eleanor’s letter.
“We finish the documents before we believe Victor.”
Ernesto looked at him.
“Would you?”
The question stopped Adrian.
“If somebody said your dad wasn’t your dad?”
Adrian looked at the photograph of William alive after his funeral.
“I guess I already am.”
Ernesto swallowed.
Mateo sat on the floor.
Not touching him.
Giving him space.
Sofia opened the final envelope.
DNA report.
Old.
Faded.
Subject names coded.
CHILD E.R.
PATERNAL MATCH EXCLUDED: MATEO REYES.
Ernesto made a small sound.
Mateo looked down.
“I knew.”
The boy stared.
“You knew?”
“Yes.”
“And you’re still my dad?”
Mateo broke.
“Yes.”
Ernesto stood frozen.
Then:
“Who is he?”
Sofia shook her head.
“I was never told.”
“You’re my mom.”
“I know.”
“You don’t know?”
Tears filled her eyes.
“I was part of a protected fertility program when I was younger. Donor records were sealed.”
Adrian looked at Eleanor’s papers.
Private trust.
Another child.
The river families.
Victor searching.
A donor.
His pulse changed.
“No.”
Daniel looked at him.
“What?”
Adrian found the trust schedule.
One line:
BIOLOGICAL DESCENDANTS OF WILLIAM COLE — SECOND LINE.
He stared.
“Second line.”
Mateo looked up.
Sofia covered her mouth.
Adrian turned the DNA page.
One preserved comparison sample.
WILLIAM COLE.
Probability of grandparent relationship to E.R.:
99.8%.
Silence.
Ernesto looked at Adrian.
“What does that mean?”
Adrian could barely speak.
“It means your biological father was probably my brother.”
Ernesto frowned.
“You have a brother?”
“I didn’t know I did.”
Eleanor’s letter continued.
William had fathered another son before marrying her.
The boy was hidden after Victor learned about the trust.
Years later, that son entered a donor program under a protected identity.
Sofia became pregnant.
Victor never found the son.
But he found the possibility of a child.
That was why Ernesto mattered.
Not because of a ledger.
Because of blood.
Cole trust voting rights could pass through William’s second line if Adrian died without children.
Ernesto was a contingency heir.
Victor had planned the crash to remove Adrian.
Then use or eliminate Ernesto before anyone discovered what he was.
Adrian sat beside the boy.
Ernesto looked sick.
“I don’t want your company.”
“Good.”
“I don’t want your money.”
“Better.”
“I want my mom.”
Adrian looked at Sofia.
“She’s here.”
“And my dad.”
Mateo’s face broke again.
Adrian looked at him.
“He’s here too.”
Ernesto finally crossed the room.
Mateo pulled him into his arms.
No speech.
Just both of them crying.
Three weeks later, Victor was indicted on conspiracy, attempted murder, fraud, bribery, obstruction, and charges tied to William and Eleanor’s disappearances.
Daniel turned state’s evidence.
Marcus was cleared.
Mateo’s old embezzlement accusation collapsed under the original ledger.
Cole Meridian froze the riverfront redevelopment and funded independent legal representation for every household facing eviction.
Adrian refused to let his company control the process.
Sofia hated publicity.
Ernesto hated suits.
Both avoided Adrian’s penthouse whenever possible.
That felt healthy.
One cold morning, Adrian returned to the bridge with Ernesto and Marcus.
The river ran dark below them.
Ernesto untied the red string and handed Marcus the gold watch.
“You lost this.”
Marcus smiled.
“I think you earned it.”
“No.”
Ernesto shoved it into his hand.
“I don’t wear old-man watches.”
Marcus laughed so hard his injured shoulder hurt.
Adrian pulled a folded paper from his pocket.
Ernesto had written it in the hospital while Adrian slept.
ONE LIFE SAVED.
PAYMENT: ONE BOX OF MILK.
Adrian looked at him.
“You charging interest?”
Ernesto shook his head.
“You don’t owe me.”
“That sounds familiar.”
Sofia approached from the path carrying an old metal evidence box.
Her face was pale.
“What?” Adrian asked.
“I found this in Eleanor’s locker.”
Inside lay one final envelope.
TO ADRIAN — IF VICTOR IS CAUGHT.
Adrian opened it.
His mother’s handwriting.
One sentence stopped him.
Victor did not order the bridge crash.
Marcus looked over his shoulder.
“What?”
Adrian kept reading.
The person who ordered your death knew Ernesto would be under that bridge.
Ernesto’s smile disappeared.
Sofia whispered:
“No.”
Adrian turned the page.
A photograph.
Ernesto.
Taken one month before the crash.
He was standing beneath the same bridge.
On the back:
KEEP THE BOY IN POSITION.
Adrian slowly looked at him.
The child’s face had gone white.
Mateo arrived behind Sofia.
He saw the photograph.
Then whispered:
“They didn’t forget my son.”
His voice broke.
“They used him.”
CUT.
