Chapter 4 - The Boy Who Refused the Money

Adrian signed himself out against medical advice.

Daniel argued.

Adrian let him.

Then he sent Daniel to retrieve clothes from the penthouse.

The moment the elevator doors closed, Adrian left through the service exit with Ernesto.

A hospital social worker tried to stop them.

Adrian gave her his private number and promised Ernesto would remain with him until family services could confirm placement.

The boy hated that word.

“Placement.”

Adrian heard it in the way he repeated it.

“You have somewhere else you want to go?”

“My apartment.”

“Then we go there.”

A driver from an independent car service took them south.

Adrian did not use Cole Meridian vehicles.

Ernesto noticed.

“You really don’t trust your guy.”

“No.”

“You gonna fire him?”

“I’m going to find out if he tried to kill me first.”

Ernesto considered that.

“Good plan.”

The apartment sat above a shuttered laundromat.

The lock had been forced.

Adrian stopped Ernesto at the stairs.

“Stay behind me.”

“I live here.”

“Tonight you live behind me.”

Inside, every drawer had been opened.

Mattress sliced.

Closet emptied.

Nothing expensive taken because there was nothing expensive to take.

Family photographs still stood on a shelf.

That told Adrian exactly what this was.

Search.

Not robbery.

Ernesto ran to the kitchen.

“Blue cabinet.”

He dropped to his knees and pried at a floorboard.

Adrian helped.

Under it sat a flash drive wrapped in plastic.

Label:

RIVER.

Adrian plugged it into a clean laptop he had bought on the way.

Folders opened.

Invoices.

Wire instructions.

Shell companies.

Property maps along the riverfront redevelopment zone.

Eviction payments.

Adrian recognized Cole Meridian subsidiary codes.

His pulse climbed.

“These are internal.”

Ernesto leaned close.

“Is that bad?”

“Yes.”

“How bad?”

“Bad enough someone put my car in a river.”

One audio file sat alone.

SOFIA_FINAL_01.

Adrian pressed play.

A woman’s voice.

Quiet.

Tired.

“If Adrian Cole hears this, someone inside his family is stealing from him.”

Ernesto went pale.

“My mom.”

Sofia continued.

“I copied payment records from Ridgeway because they made no sense. Eviction contractors paid through charities. Security invoices paid to companies with no employees.”

A male voice entered.

Marcus.

Adrian leaned closer.

“It’s worse,” Marcus said. “Victor has been using the same account pattern for years.”

Sofia whispered, “Does Adrian know?”

“No.”

“Why not?”

“Because the first man who tried to tell him died.”

Silence.

Sofia asked:

“Who?”

Marcus answered:

“His father.”

Adrian stopped breathing.

Ernesto looked at him.

“Your dad?”

Adrian’s hand shook over the trackpad.

The audio continued.

Marcus said:

“If anything happens to me, don’t go to police. Don’t go to Cole security. Find Adrian directly.”

Sofia whispered:

“And if Adrian is already gone?”

Marcus answered:

“Then Victor won.”

A hard knock hit the apartment door.

Ernesto flinched.

Adrian closed the laptop.

Another knock.

Then Daniel’s voice from the hall.

May you like

“Adrian. Open the door.”

CUT.
