Chapter 10 - Margaret's Granddaughter

Mara slammed the space bar and froze her mother's face on-screen.
The room went silent except for the laptop fan.
She stood so fast the chair tipped backward.
"No."
Nora reached for her.
Mara stepped away.
"Don't touch me."
"Mara—"
"You knew."
Nora's hand fell.
That was enough.
Mara looked at Victor.
His eyes dropped.
Then Celeste.
Confusion, not guilt.
Then Adrian.
He stood near the door, jaw locked.
"You knew too," Mara said.
He didn't answer quickly enough.
Mara grabbed the laptop and nearly tore the cable from the drive.
"How long?"
"I suspected."
"How long?"
"Years."
Her palm hit his face before she decided to move.
The crack snapped through the lounge.
Adrian's head turned.
No one moved.
Mara's hand burned.
"You invited me here knowing Margaret was my grandmother."
Adrian slowly looked back at her.
A red mark spread across his cheek.
"Margaret forbade disclosure."
"She's dead."
"Her instructions survived her."
"My mother died keeping your family's secrets."
"You don't know that."
Nora said, "She died because she wouldn't stop digging."
Adrian looked at her. "You cannot prove that."
"Then why are you so afraid of a fourteen-year-old drive?"
The clock outside changed to 11:28.
Victor bent to pick up the fallen chair.
His hands shook.
"We need to verify the claim."
Mara laughed once, sharp and empty. "Now you're interested in verification?"
"Bloodline claims affect trust construction."
"I'm not making a claim. My dead mother is."
She hit play.
Rachel continued on-screen.
"Margaret had me when she was nineteen. Her father forced a private adoption through family counsel. I didn't learn the truth until I was thirty-one. By then Margaret was already running Mercer Holdings and I had Mara."
Rachel looked off-camera.
A woman's voice, older, unmistakably Margaret's, said, "Tell her why we didn't put her in the will."
Mara's breath caught.
Rachel nodded.
"Because direct inheritance would make you a target. Margaret believed somebody inside the company was already altering trust records. She gave you authority instead of money. Authority you couldn't use to enrich yourself."
Victor sat down hard.
Celeste whispered, "Trust Protector."
Rachel continued.
"If the structure survived, you could stop a bad succession without anyone claiming you were fighting for your own payout."
Mara paused the video again.
Her fingers trembled over the keyboard.
"Documents," she said. "I want documents."
Nora nodded quickly. "There are letters on the drive. Birth record too."
Mara opened the folder.
Scans appeared.
Rachel's original adoption petition.
A sealed amended birth record.
Letters between Rachel and Margaret spanning eight years.
One included a photograph of the two women standing on a lake dock.
Margaret's handwriting across the bottom:
MY DAUGHTER. MY SECOND CHANCE.
Mara looked away before the words could blur.
A knock hit the lounge door.
Hard.
"Mr. Mercer," a man called. "Board counsel is assembled. Eleven-thirty in ninety seconds."
Adrian didn't answer.
Mara looked at him.
"Were you at my mother's funeral?"
His face changed.
Barely.
Nora saw it.
"He was."
Mara turned. "What?"
Nora moved to the drive folders and opened PHOTOS.
"Rachel's funeral was watched. Margaret was afraid whoever had altered the trust would look for anything Rachel passed to you."
Image thumbnails filled the screen.
Mara at twenty.
Black coat.
Standing beside her father's wheelchair.
Another image showed mourners at the cemetery entrance.
Mara opened it.
Far behind the family, beneath a black umbrella, stood a young man.
Adrian.
Her stomach clenched.
She zoomed.
The image broke into grain.
Still clear enough.
At his wrist, a silver wolf cuff link.
Mara turned the laptop toward him.
"You were there."
Adrian didn't deny it.
"Margaret sent me."
"To do what?"
"Watch."
"Watch me?"
"Watch everyone."
"Did you know who I was?"
"Yes."
The answer hit harder than a lie.
Mara stared at him.
Fourteen years.
He had known her name, her face, her connection to Margaret.
She had known nothing.
Celeste stepped away from him as if distance could erase their engagement.
"You told me you first heard about Mara after Margaret's funeral."
Adrian's eyes stayed on Mara.
"I said Margaret formalized her role after the funeral."
"No. You said—"
"This isn't about you."
Celeste's face hardened.
Mara closed the laptop.
"It's about all of us. That's how this worked. You gave everyone a different sentence and counted on us never comparing them."
The hallway clock chimed 11:30.
Victor looked toward the door.
"The bank check just failed."
Adrian's phone exploded with incoming notifications.
One.
Two.
Five.
Nine.
He stared at the screen.
Mara watched him lose control for the first time.
Then the ballroom music cut off.
Every light in the lounge flickered.
A public-address tone sounded overhead.
Adrian looked up.
His own voice came through the building speakers.
"Ladies and gentlemen, the succession vote will begin immediately."
Adrian's face went blank.
"I didn't trigger that."
Celeste whispered, "Then who did?"
A magnetic lock snapped on the lounge door.
Mara rushed to it.
Wouldn't open.
The ballroom doors thudded shut outside.
Guests shouted.
Then the wall monitor in the lounge powered on by itself.
Video filled the screen.
Mara appeared in the ballroom earlier that night, standing with Adrian near a pillar.
He handed her the cream envelope.
The clip cut.
Now the envelope was thick with visible cash.
Mara's hand closed around it.
A timestamp burned in the corner.
8:17 PM.
Celeste stared. "That's fake."
Another camera angle appeared.
Mara seemed to lean toward Adrian.
Subtitles appeared beneath them.
PAYMENT RECEIVED. APPROVAL TONIGHT.
The lounge speaker clicked.
A different male voice addressed the ballroom.
"Perhaps our Trust Protector should explain why she's being paid."
Mara looked at Adrian.
He was staring at the monitor too.
Then the screen split.
On one side, the fake bribery video.
On the other, Mara's newly opened family documents.
Her mother's adoption record.
Margaret's letters.
Her private history broadcast to the gala.
Mara's stomach dropped.
Whoever controlled the system had copied the drive in minutes.
A line of text appeared beneath the video:
MARA VOSS - SECRET BENEFICIARY.
CONFLICT OF INTEREST.
Mara's phone vibrated.
UNKNOWN NUMBER.
ONE SIGNATURE ENDS THIS.
A second message arrived.
OR WE SHOW THEM WHAT YOUR MOTHER DID NEXT.
Then the lounge door unlocked.
Slowly.
May you like
From the ballroom, hundreds of guests were already turning toward Mara.
