Chapter 2 - The Woman in the Silver Mask

Adrian grabbed the document before Mara could fold it shut.
She caught his wrist.
For one beat, neither of them moved.
"Give it back," Mara said.
Adrian released the page first.
"I haven't seen that signature before."
Celeste barked out a laugh. "That's your answer?"
"Stay out of this."
"You dragged all of us into it."
Mara stepped between them and held the page up to the ballroom light. The signature line had been pressed hard enough to leave faint grooves in the paper.
Someone had wanted it to survive scrutiny.
"Who had access to this?"
Adrian looked toward the east corridor. "Trust counsel. My office. Margaret's archive."
"And you."
"Yes."
Mara didn't like how quickly he admitted it.
A security guard touched his earpiece.
"Mr. Mercer, Mr. Hale is asking whether the certification meeting is delayed."
Adrian's mouth tightened. "Tell him yes. Ten minutes."
"No," Mara said.
The guard paused.
Mara pointed at the forged signature. "Nothing happens in ten minutes. Nothing happens tonight until I know who put my name on this."
Adrian lowered his voice. "You don't understand what you're freezing."
"Then explain it."
"Not here."
"You keep saying that."
Celeste stepped closer. "Because every private room in this building belongs to him."
Mara turned to the guard. "Is there an archive?"
His eyes went to Adrian.
Wrong answer.
Mara nodded once. "Take me there."
Adrian exhaled through his nose. "Fine."
He moved first.
Mara followed because leaving him behind felt more dangerous than keeping him where she could see him.
Celeste came too.
Adrian stopped at the corridor entrance. "Not you."
Celeste's smile sharpened. "Afraid I might remember something?"
"Afraid you might destroy something."
Her face changed.
Not much.
Enough.
Mara saw it.
"She's coming."
Adrian's eyes shifted to Mara.
"You want answers? I want witnesses."
They crossed into a quieter wing behind the ballroom. Music thudded through the walls like a distant pulse.
A woman in a black staff dress hurried past them with a tray, then almost dropped it when she recognized Adrian.
He didn't notice.
Mara did.
Everyone in the building reacted to him before he spoke.
At the end of the hall, a steel door opened after the guard scanned his badge.
Cold air rolled out.
Rows of locked cabinets filled the archive room. A bank of monitors covered one wall.
Mara stopped beside the first terminal.
"Show me every access to Margaret's file in the last month."
The guard shifted. "I can't authorize—"
"I can," Adrian said.
Again, too easy.
The guard typed.
A list populated the screen.
Mara leaned in.
MERCER, ADRIAN - six entries.
HALE, VICTOR - four.
GRANT, LEO - security audit.
Then her own name.
VOSS, MARA E. - October 9, 8:17 PM.
Mara's nail struck the monitor.
"That's impossible."
Celeste moved beside her. "Three weeks ago."
"I was in Denver."
Adrian looked at the guard. "How was identity verified?"
"Temporary estate credential plus visual authorization."
"Visual by who?"
The guard swallowed. "Chief Grant."
Adrian's head came up. "Get him."
Thirty seconds later, footsteps hit the tile outside.
Leo Grant entered fast.
He was thick through the shoulders, gray at the temples, and already pale.
"Mr. Mercer."
Adrian pointed at the screen. "You cleared Mara Voss into this room on October ninth."
Grant looked at Mara.
His face emptied.
"No."
Mara stepped toward him. "The system says you did."
Grant moved to the keyboard himself.
His fingers worked too quickly.
"There should be video."
The screen flickered.
A camera index appeared.
CAM 4 - EAST ARCHIVE.
Grant clicked 20:16.
The hallway outside the archive filled the monitor.
A figure entered frame.
Gray dress.
Dark hair pinned back.
Silver mask.
Mara stopped breathing.
Celeste whispered, "Oh, God."
The woman on-screen moved exactly like someone trying to be seen.
Slowly.
Centered beneath the camera.
She turned once toward the lens.
The silver mask covered most of her face.
Mara touched the mask still hanging from her hand.
Same shape.
Same curling edge near the left cheek.
"That's not me."
Grant nodded. "I know."
Adrian looked at him. "You authorized her."
"No." Grant hit another key. "My credential did. I was in Boston that night. Security conference."
He pulled up travel logs.
Boarding pass.
Hotel key record.
Conference badge scan.
Someone had cloned his authorization too.
Mara stared at the footage.
The false Mara reached the archive door.
She raised a hand to the biometric reader.
The feed jumped.
Static.
Then normal video returned with her already inside.
"Back it up," Mara said.
Grant did.
Static.
Again.
"Frame by frame."
Grant slowed it.
A sleeve moved beneath the camera.
Not gray.
Black.
The false woman wasn't alone.
Mara leaned closer.
One frame caught the second person at the edge of the image.
A man's forearm.
White shirt cuff.
Something silver flashed at his wrist.
"Stop."
Grant froze the frame.
Mara pointed. "Zoom."
Pixels expanded.
The silver object became two narrow shapes joined at the center.
Celeste moved closer to the screen.
"Cuff link."
Grant sharpened the image.
A tiny animal head emerged.
Long snout.
Raised ears.
A wolf.
Mara looked at Adrian.
His jacket sleeves covered his cuffs.
"Who wears those?"
Grant shook his head. "Could be custom."
Adrian pulled out his phone. "I'll have procurement search vendor records."
Mara watched his hand.
His fingers didn't shake.
Her own phone vibrated.
UNKNOWN NUMBER.
She opened the message.
ONE CAMERA LIES. THE OTHER REMEMBERS.
A second message appeared immediately.
DON'T LET HIM CHOOSE WHAT YOU SEE.
Mara turned the phone facedown.
"There are other cameras?"
Grant nodded slowly. "Inside the archive. But that feed is locally stored. Separate system."
Adrian's expression hardened. "Why wasn't that pulled first?"
"Because nobody asked."
Grant moved toward a locked equipment cabinet.
The lights flickered.
Once.
Twice.
Then went out.
Celeste swore.
Emergency strips turned the room red.
A metallic click came from the cabinet.
Grant yanked it open.
"Drive's gone."
Adrian stepped forward. "What?"
"Local camera drive. Someone removed it."
Mara's phone vibrated again.
A photograph loaded.
It showed a black hard drive sitting on a white table.
Stamped on the corner: ARCHIVE INTERIOR 04.
Underneath the image:
ASK WHO KNEW YOU'D COME LOOKING TONIGHT.
Mara lifted her eyes.
The power returned.
Adrian stood ten feet away, staring at Grant.
"Lock the building," he said.
Mara's attention dropped to his right wrist as he pushed his jacket sleeve back to check his watch.
White cuff.
French closure.
Silver flashed beneath the fabric.
Her pulse jumped.
Adrian noticed her looking.
He tugged his sleeve down.
"What?"
Mara stepped closer.
"Show me your cuff link."
Celeste went still.
Adrian's face didn't move.
"Mara."
"Show me."
He lifted his hand slowly.
Before he could expose the cuff, Grant's monitor beeped.
A recovered cache file appeared.
Mara turned.
The fake woman in the silver mask had entered the archive.
Inside-camera footage showed her from behind.
She reached up.
Pulled off the wig.
Short hair underneath.
Then a man's hand entered frame and removed the mask from her face before the camera could catch her features.
The hand was bare.
On the wrist sat a silver wolf cuff link.
Mara enlarged the frame until the metal filled half the monitor.
Behind her, the archive door opened.
Adrian's voice came from much closer than she expected.
"Find what you were looking for?"
Mara minimized the image.
Too late.
May you like
Something silver flashed at his wrist.
