Chapter 7 - The First Forgery

Victor lunged for the passport.

Mara snapped it shut and stepped behind the open safe door.

"Back off."

He stopped two feet away.

"You don't understand what you're holding."

Nora moved between them. "Then explain it without grabbing."

Victor's chest rose and fell.

The broken door hung crooked behind him.

No security guards followed.

Mara noticed that.

"You came alone."

"I told them to wait."

"Why?"

"Because this is privileged."

"That word's doing a lot of work tonight."

Victor closed his eyes for a second.

"Julian Kane was Adrian's legal name."

Mara kept the passport against her chest.

"Was?"

"His mother married into the Mercer family. Margaret later sponsored a legal name change after his stepfather died."

Nora gave a short laugh.

"Sponsored?"

Victor looked at her. "Don't."

"Tell her how he entered the company."

"Nora."

"Tell her."

Victor's mouth tightened.

Mara raised her phone.

"I'll ask him myself."

"He entered through operations," Victor said quickly.

"Doing what?"

"Acquisitions integration."

"And my mother?"

Victor looked at the floor.

That was enough.

"They worked together."

"Sometimes."

Mara stepped closer. "Did she accuse him of fraud?"

Victor didn't answer.

Nora did.

"Yes."

Victor turned on her. "She raised concerns. That's not the same thing."

"She put them in writing."

"And Margaret investigated."

"Quietly."

"Because allegations against family require care."

Mara's grip tightened around the passport.

"Was Adrian cleared?"

Victor hesitated.

A pipe knocked somewhere in the wall.

Mara waited.

"Was he cleared?"

"The investigation was inconclusive."

Nora said, "Because evidence disappeared."

Victor snapped, "Because Rachel died before she could authenticate half of it."

The words landed hard.

Mara felt her breath catch.

Victor regretted them immediately.

"Authenticate how?"

No one answered.

Mara looked at the empty cassette case.

"The missing tape."

Victor stared at it.

His face gave him away.

"You knew about it."

"I knew Margaret recorded contingency statements."

"Where is it?"

"I don't know."

A phone buzzed.

Not Mara's.

Victor looked at his screen.

ADRIAN.

He declined the call.

Mara noticed.

"Why aren't you answering him?"

Victor slid the phone away. "Because this conversation gets worse every time he enters it."

That was the first thing Victor had said that sounded like fear.

Footsteps approached in the corridor.

Victor moved fast.

"Hide the passport."

Mara stared at him.

"Now."

She shoved it inside the back waistband of her dress just as Adrian appeared in the doorway with two guards.

His eyes swept the room.

Safe.

Documents.

Victor.

Nora.

Mara.

"Everyone out," he said.

Mara held up the blue-signed contingency draft.

"This says something different from your packet."

Adrian looked at Victor.

Victor said nothing.

"Where did you get that?"

"Margaret's safe."

"It may be superseded."

"By the black-ink page?"

Adrian's jaw tightened.

Mara stepped closer. "You wore wolf cuff links fourteen years ago."

His expression didn't change.

"So did half the men in this family. It was a Mercer crest variation."

"You didn't mention that upstairs."

"You didn't ask whether I owned them as a twenty-five-year-old."

"Cute."

"Accurate."

Mara hated that he had an answer for everything.

Celeste's voice came from the hall.

"Then maybe I should answer something."

Everyone turned.

She stood barefoot now, her gold heels in one hand.

A guard moved to block her.

She shoved the heels into his chest.

"Move."

He did.

Celeste entered and looked at Mara.

"I signed one of the papers."

Adrian went still.

Victor whispered, "Celeste."

She ignored him.

Mara stepped toward her. "What papers?"

"The succession packet."

"As what?"

Celeste swallowed.

"Notary."

Mara stared.

"You're a notary?"

"For the foundation. It was mostly donor affidavits."

Adrian's voice sharpened. "Don't say another word without counsel."

Celeste laughed once. "Whose counsel? Yours?"

She reached into her gold clutch and pulled out a small rectangular seal.

The edge was cracked.

A hairline fracture cut through the raised letter M in MERCER.

Mara had seen that mark.

Not tonight.

On one of the documents in the forged packet.

"You notarized it," Mara said.

Celeste nodded.

"When?"

"Six weeks ago."

"The document says four months ago."

Celeste looked at Adrian.

He didn't move.

Mara felt the room shift.

"You backdated it."

"Yes."

Victor rubbed both hands over his face.

Adrian said, "She was told she was correcting an execution defect."

Celeste turned on him. "You told me Margaret signed the wrong witness page."

"That was the information I had."

"You said the bank would walk if we didn't fix it."

"And you signed anyway."

Celeste flinched.

Mara saw it.

Adrian had been waiting for that line.

He wanted Celeste guilty enough that nobody would believe the rest.

Mara took the forged packet from her clutch and flipped to the final page.

The cracked M appeared in the seal beside Margaret's witness block.

"This one?"

Celeste leaned in.

"Yes."

"Did you see Margaret sign it?"

"No."

"Did you see me sign it?"

Celeste shook her head.

"Then why notarize it?"

Her eyes filled, but she didn't look away.

"Because Adrian had recordings of my father moving foundation money through a side account. He said if I didn't correct the page, he'd turn everything over to federal investigators and my father would die in prison."

Adrian's face went flat.

"That's a lie."

"Is it?"

"Yes."

Celeste reached for her phone.

Adrian stepped forward.

Mara blocked him.

Celeste opened an audio file.

Adrian's voice filled the room.

SIGN THE CORRECTION, CELESTE. OR YOUR FATHER'S PROBLEM BECOMES EVERYONE'S PROBLEM.

The recording stopped.

No one spoke.

Mara looked at Adrian.

His face had changed.

Not panic.

Calculation.

"That proves pressure," he said. "It doesn't prove forgery."

"It proves you wanted the document fixed," Mara said.

"A defective document."

Mara turned back to Celeste.

"You forged Margaret's signature?"

Celeste's breathing shortened.

"No."

"Then whose?"

Celeste looked at the page in Mara's hand.

Her finger touched one line.

Not Margaret's.

Not the witness's.

Another auxiliary consent page.

"I copied Victor's initials here because Adrian said Victor had already approved the correction."

Victor swore.

Celeste's voice shook now.

"Yes. I forged a signature."

Mara stared at her.

Celeste pointed at Mara's name on the final page.

"But Mara..."

Her face lost what little color remained.

May you like

"I didn't forge yours."
