Chapter 11 - The Golden Mask

Mara shoved the door open before anyone could stop her.

The ballroom turned as one body.

Phones rose.

Whispers broke across the room.

The giant screen above the stage replayed the fake envelope exchange.

Mara walked straight toward it.

Celeste caught up on her left.

Nora on her right.

Adrian followed three steps behind.

A board member near the stage pointed at Mara. "Is the video authentic?"

"No."

"Did you receive money from Adrian Mercer tonight?"

"No."

"Are you Margaret Mercer's granddaughter?"

Mara stopped.

That question cut through everything else.

She looked at the faces around her.

Some hungry.

Some frightened.

Some already deciding what version would sound best tomorrow.

"Yes," she said.

The room erupted.

Victor climbed onto the stage and grabbed a microphone.

"Everyone needs to stop recording."

Nobody stopped.

Mara took the microphone from him.

"Keep recording."

Victor stared at her.

"Mara—"

"If somebody wants this public, let's make it public correctly."

She pointed at the giant screen.

"Freeze the first frame."

No technician responded.

The video kept playing.

Celeste ran to the AV table.

The operator sat with both hands raised.

"I'm locked out."

Mara shouted, "Pull the cable."

He yanked the main feed.

The screen went black.

For two seconds.

Then powered back on through a backup channel.

Fake Mara accepted fake cash again.

A guest laughed nervously.

Mara looked at the timestamp.

8:17 PM.

Something clicked.

"Celeste. What time did you first confront me?"

"Eight twenty-something."

"Registration photo."

Celeste understood.

She grabbed the event photographer by the sleeve and pulled him toward the laptop at the AV table.

"Show us the raw file from Mara's arrival."

He opened his camera archive.

Image metadata:

8:31:04 PM.

Mara pointed at the screen.

"The fake video says I was inside receiving cash at 8:17. I did not enter the building until 8:31."

The room changed.

Not belief.

Doubt.

Enough.

Adrian stepped onto the stage.

"The video is compromised."

Mara looked at him. "You knew fast."

"Because I was there."

"Convenient again."

A board member shouted, "What about the trust documents?"

Victor lifted the original packet.

"Those require forensic review."

Celeste stepped onto the stage beside him.

"I can save you some time."

Adrian turned sharply.

She held up her cracked notary seal.

"I backdated part of the succession packet six weeks ago."

Gasps hit the room.

Mara watched Adrian's face.

He didn't move.

Celeste continued.

"Adrian told me I was correcting a defective witness page. I forged Victor Hale's initials on one auxiliary consent. I did not forge Mara Voss's signature. I never saw her page."

Victor closed his eyes.

One board member cursed aloud.

Another said, "Then the whole packet is contaminated."

Adrian finally spoke.

"Celeste is under pressure and trying to reduce her exposure."

She laughed into the microphone.

"There he is."

Adrian pulled a second folio from the hands of a waiting attorney.

"Fortunately, Margaret executed parallel originals."

Victor's head snapped up.

"What parallel originals?"

Adrian opened the folio.

Blue signatures.

Witness blocks.

Embossed seals.

A murmur moved across the board tables.

Mara's stomach tightened.

"Where did that come from?"

"Off-site counsel vault."

Victor stepped closer. "I am trust counsel. I know of no parallel original."

"You know now."

Adrian handed the packet to the nearest director.

Mara watched the pages turn.

Everything looked clean.

Too clean.

She thought of Rachel.

Margaret.

Blue ink.

Paper made to survive scrutiny.

Then she saw the notary impression.

A tiny fracture through the M.

Mara grabbed the packet from the director.

Adrian reached for it.

She held it up to the stage light.

"Celeste."

Celeste came closer.

Mara pointed.

The crack crossed the raised M in MERCER exactly where Celeste's seal was damaged.

Celeste's face changed.

"That's mine."

Adrian said nothing.

Mara turned to the ballroom.

"This document claims it was notarized four months ago."

She took Celeste's physical seal and held it beside the impression.

"When did this crack happen?"

Celeste didn't hesitate.

"Six weeks ago. I dropped it on a marble step outside the foundation office."

Victor reached for the packet.

His hands shook as he examined the mark.

"Then this could not have been executed four months ago."

The ballroom broke into noise.

Adrian stepped back from the microphone.

Mara saw it.

A retreat.

Small.

But real.

She pressed harder.

"The blue ink was supposed to make it look authentic. The old date was supposed to put it beyond tonight. But the seal didn't exist in this condition four months ago."

A director stood. "Call federal counsel. Now."

Another shouted, "Freeze all trust actions."

Adrian raised both hands. "Everyone stop. A damaged seal proves duplication, not intent."

Celeste stared at him.

Then her hand went to her face.

Her gold mask.

She had carried it downstairs and back up without noticing.

"Why is this thing so heavy?"

Mara looked at her.

"What?"

"It has been pulling on my cheek all night. I thought it was the metalwork."

Nora's head snapped around.

"Who gave you that mask?"

Celeste frowned. "Your assistant at registration."

"I don't have an assistant."

Mara's pulse jumped.

Nora moved first.

She grabbed the mask and bent the inner rim.

A seam appeared beneath the velvet lining.

"Knife."

Mara handed her the steak knife still tucked into her clutch from the coat room.

Nora sliced the lining.

A tiny black memory card dropped onto Mara's palm.

The room went silent again.

Celeste whispered, "What is that?"

Nora stared at it. "The copy Margaret never trusted to a safe."

The AV operator found an adapter.

Mara inserted the card into an offline laptop.

One file.

MARGARET_FINAL.mp4.

She clicked.

Margaret Mercer appeared on the giant screen.

Older than in the photos.

Thin.

Oxygen tubing beneath her nose.

Still sitting straight.

Her eyes went directly into the camera.

"If you're hearing this," she said, "then Adrian has attempted to take control."

Every head in the ballroom turned toward him.

Adrian stopped moving.

Margaret continued.

"Adrian Mercer is not my chosen heir."

Celeste covered her mouth.

Victor gripped the table.

Margaret leaned closer to the camera.

May you like

"He is the reason I created Mara's position in the first place."
