Chapter 10 - Sarah Stops Trusting Daniel

I blocked the doorway.

“No.”

Daniel stared.

“What?”

“You don’t go to St. Vincent until you finish telling me what happened around my first pregnancy.”

His jaw tightened.

“Sarah.”

“Maya is safe. Evan is safe. Federal agents are outside. You have five minutes.”

Karen looked at Daniel.

“She’s right.”

He almost laughed.

“Of course you’d say that.”

“I’ve been listening to you ration truth for two hours.”

Good.

Daniel sat.

I stayed standing.

Maya looked uncomfortable.

I hated involving her.

Daniel had made secrecy a family inheritance.

I was ending it.

“What did Paul access?”

“My OB record.”

“What specifically?”

“Appointment schedule. Bloodwork. emergency contact.”

“Did he alter anything?”

“No evidence.”

“Did he contact the clinic?”

“One call from his desk line.”

My stomach tightened.

“To who?”

“Billing office.”

“Why?”

“He claimed he was verifying insurance fraud.”

“Did anyone remember him?”

“Receptionist did.”

“What did he ask?”

“Whether you had upcoming procedures.”

I stared.

“At ten weeks pregnant?”

“Yes.”

Maya whispered:

“That’s creepy.”

“Yes.”

I looked at Daniel.

“And after I miscarried?”

“Paul sent flowers.”

My skin went cold.

I remembered.

White lilies.

No card.

Hospital volunteer said anonymous.

I had thrown them away because the smell made me sick.

Daniel continued:

“I found out later he ordered them.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because I thought he wanted me to.”

“That makes no sense.”

“He wanted me scared.”

“And you decided fear was safer if only you carried it.”

“Yes.”

I laughed.

There it was.

Daniel’s religion.

Carry the secret.

Control the room.

Protect everyone by removing their choices.

Evan looked away.

He recognized it because Laura’s life had been shaped by the same thing.

I said:

“You stopped investigating Mercer.”

“Yes.”

“Because of me.”

“Yes.”

“No.”

Daniel looked up.

“You stopped because you were afraid.”

“Yes.”

“Say that.”

“I was afraid.”

Good.

Not noble.

Not protective.

Afraid.

I sat.

My legs shook.

Maya rubbed my back.

Daniel said:

“I never had proof Paul caused your miscarriage.”

“Then never imply he did unless evidence proves it.”

“I won’t.”

“Do you understand what you’ve done to me tonight?”

His eyes filled.

“Yes.”

“No, you don’t.”

He looked down.

Maybe someday.

Not tonight.

Evan’s phone buzzed.

A new Laura video file had unlocked automatically after DNA confirmation.

Evan stared.

“She built triggers.”

Daniel nodded.

“Smart.”

Evan played it.

Laura appeared.

“If Paul Mercer’s paternity has been confirmed, Richard’s last archive should be accessible.”

She held up a St. Vincent key card.

Same kind Maya stole.

“Archive Level B.”

Daniel looked at Karen.

Laura continued:

“Richard hid copies inside the medical archive because Paul believed the building had been stripped after closure.”

Evan whispered:

“Mom.”

“He kept everything.”

Laura shook her head on screen.

“No. Richard kept enough.”

Then:

“Sarah Miller, if you are seeing this, I am sorry.”

I froze.

Laura knew me.

Daniel looked at me.

I leaned closer.

Laura continued:

“Daniel never touched me. Whatever Paul tells you, there was no affair.”

My throat tightened.

Why address that?

Then:

“But Daniel did lie to you because of me.”

No surprise.

“He believed silence would protect you.”

I looked at him.

He looked away.

Laura said:

“It didn’t.”

The screen glitched.

Then:

“Paul learned Sarah was pregnant because he was reading Daniel’s personal vulnerability file.”

Daniel whispered:

“Vulnerability file?”

Karen swore.

Laura continued:

“He cataloged spouses, children, debts, illnesses.”

Maya’s face drained.

Not random access.

Systematic coercion.

“Richard found a copy.”

Laura held up a blue folder.

“St. Vincent archive.”

Evan paused the video.

“We need that.”

Karen nodded.

“Yes.”

Daniel stood.

This time I did not block him.

But I said:

“I’m coming.”

“No.”

I stared.

He stopped himself.

Then:

“Okay.”

Progress.

Tiny.

We left Maya at the safe house with two agents.

She hated it.

Evan stayed with us.

St. Vincent was dark except for emergency floodlights federal agents brought.

Key card.

Archive Level B.

Basement.

Rows of metal shelves.

Patient files.

Old billing servers.

Dust.

Then a locked interior room.

The card opened it.

Inside:

Blue binders.

Police case numbers.

Insurance claims.

Employee records.

One shelf marked:

MILLER.

My stomach dropped.

Daniel pulled the file.

SARAH MILLER.

Appointments.

Work address.

Pregnancy.

MAYA - future child notation added later.

Another page:

PRESSURE POINT: MEDICAL ACCESS.

Daniel’s hands shook.

Paul had built a coercion file on us.

Maya too.

Even before birth.

I felt sick.

Karen said:

“This is enough for warrants.”

Evan searched CROSS.

Found:

LAURA CROSS.

RICHARD CROSS.

EVAN CROSS.

The Evan file contained his original birth lab.

Father:

Paul Mercer.

Then amended documents.

Changed father:

Richard Cross.

A note:

R. ACCEPTS PATERNITY FOR PROTECTION.

Evan stared.

Richard had deliberately taken legal fatherhood to shield him.

He whispered:

“He chose me.”

Daniel nodded.

Then Karen found another file.

MERCER / PRIVATE.

Inside:

Photographs of Laura under different identities.

Recent.

One dated five months ago.

Laura outside a grocery store.

Alive.

Another dated three months ago.

The same jacket as her video.

Then one dated eleven days ago.

St. Vincent loading entrance.

Evan stopped breathing.

“She was here.”

Daniel grabbed the photo.

Timestamp.

2:13 a.m.

Karen said:

“Security footage.”

They pulled the old local recorder.

Some cameras still worked on standalone loops.

Eleven days ago.

Laura entered.

Forty minutes later:

Paul Mercer.

Gun visible.

Daniel whispered:

“He found her.”

Another frame.

Mercer leaving.

Alone.

No Laura.

Evan’s face drained.

“Where did she go?”

We searched deeper.

One door behind the archive.

Keypad.

The stolen bracelet tracker sat on the floor beneath it.

Mercer had left it here.

Bait.

Karen inspected.

“No obvious trap.”

Daniel entered code from Mercer’s old badge ID.

Rejected.

Evan tried his birth date.

Rejected.

I looked at the vulnerability files.

Paul used control.

Blood.

Family.

I typed Maya’s birth date.

Green light.

Daniel stared at me.

“What?”

“Paul has been obsessed with our daughter for years.”

Door opened.

Behind it:

A private safe room.

Empty.

Except for a chair.

Fresh water bottle.

And a handwritten message on the wall.

May you like

LAURA SHOULD HAVE STAYED DEAD.

CUT.
