Chapter 3 - Evan Didn't Come to Dinner by Accident

Daniel ended the call without answering.
For three seconds, nobody spoke.
Then Maya came down the stairs.
“You put it on speaker.”
Her voice was flat.
Not crying anymore.
That scared me more.
Daniel nodded.
“Paul knows.”
“Knows what?”
“That Evan is here.”
Evan looked toward the dark window.
“How?”
“That camera.”
I shook my head.
“Then why call like he doesn’t?”
“Because he wants us to know he can.”
Maya folded her arms.
“Uncle Paul.”
The word sounded poisoned now.
Paul Mercer had taught her to ride a bike after Daniel threw out his back.
He gave her a silver charm bracelet at sixteen.
He once spent six hours at urgent care with me when Daniel was out of town.
I could not fit that man inside the one Daniel was describing.
Maybe that was the point.
Evan picked up his phone.
“I have more.”
Daniel looked at him.
“Show us.”
Maya laughed once.
“Now you want him here?”
Daniel flinched.
Evan unlocked a folder.
Photographs.
Laura.
Richard.
Daniel.
Mercer.
Insurance claim sheets.
Scanned police reports.
Maya stepped closer despite herself.
Evan swiped.
A photograph of Daniel outside the Hawthorne Motel.
Date stamped 2007.
Another.
Laura entering through the side door.
Another.
Paul Mercer behind her.
Gun holster visible.
Daniel grabbed the phone.
“I never saw this angle.”
“You kept one still.”
“I kept a cropped still.”
Evan’s jaw tightened.
“Why crop Mercer out?”
Daniel stared.
“I didn’t know he was in frame when I made the copy.”
“That makes no sense.”
“It was printed from a preview monitor. I cropped around Laura because I was trying to preserve proof she was alive without exposing the motel.”
“Convenient.”
Daniel handed the phone back.
“Believe whatever you want.”
Evan stepped forward.
“I’ve been doing that my whole life.”
Maya looked between them.
“Stop.”
Both men stopped.
She pointed at Evan.
“You recognized my dad months ago.”
“Yes.”
“You searched him.”
“Yes.”
“You kept dating me.”
“Yes.”
“Did you ever plan to bring me into this?”
“No.”
“Then why tonight?”
Evan’s face tightened.
“I got the video three days ago.”
“What video?”
“The one from my mom.”
“You said you found it four months ago.”
“I found the locker four months ago. Most files were encrypted.”
Daniel looked up sharply.
“What changed three days ago?”
“A password.”
“From who?”
“I don’t know.”
“You received it?”
“Text.”
“Number?”
“Burner.”
“What was the password?”
Evan hesitated.
“Hawthorne.”
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
Someone wanted Evan to open Laura’s files now.
Not four months ago.
Now.
I asked:
“Why?”
Nobody answered.
My phone buzzed.
Maya’s too.
Daniel’s.
Evan’s.
All at once.
Same message.
WHO IS THE BOY IN YOUR HOUSE?
Sender:
PAUL MERCER.
Maya went white.
“He texted all of us.”
Daniel grabbed his coat.
“I’m going outside.”
“No.”
“Sarah.”
“You walk out there with a gun and the man watching us gets exactly the image he wants.”
Daniel stopped.
Evan looked at me.
For the first time, respect flickered.
Daniel hated that.
Good.
I said:
“We call someone outside Paul’s chain.”
Daniel rubbed his jaw.
“Who?”
“State police.”
“No.”
“Federal.”
“No.”
“Why no?”
“Because Laura said the leak reached beyond local.”
“You have spent nineteen years using one dead woman’s warning to justify every secret.”
He looked at me.
“That warning kept you alive.”
The room went still.
“What did you say?”
Daniel looked away.
My pulse kicked.
“What did Paul do to me?”
“Nothing.”
“You just said—”
“I said I believed secrecy kept you safe.”
“From what?”
“Paul knew who you were.”
“We were married.”
“He knew where you worked. Your doctor. Our address.”
I stared.
“Why would that matter?”
Daniel’s mouth tightened.
“Because you were pregnant.”
Maya whispered:
“With me?”
Daniel did not answer fast enough.
I felt the floor shift.
Not that secret yet.
Something worse later.
I forced myself back.
“Not now.”
His eyes met mine.
He knew I would return to it.
Evan opened another image.
“Look.”
Laura stood outside a courthouse.
Mercer behind her.
Richard on the opposite side of the street.
The three people tied to Evan’s life.
Daniel zoomed.
Mercer was looking directly at Laura.
Not like a cop watching a witness.
Like a man watching someone he knew.
Evan said:
“My dad wrote on the back.”
He opened the scan.
PAUL KNEW BEFORE I DID.
Daniel read it twice.
“Knew what?”
“I don’t know.”
Maya said:
“Maybe that your mom was alive.”
Evan shook his head.
“Richard knew she was alive later.”
Daniel snapped:
“How?”
Evan stared.
“Letters.”
“What letters?”
“Between them.”
Daniel’s face changed.
“You have letters from Laura to Richard?”
“Yes.”
“After the fire?”
“Yes.”
“How long after?”
“Years.”
Daniel sat.
That hit him harder than anything yet.
Laura had trusted Richard eventually.
Not Daniel.
Evan continued:
“Richard helped her stay hidden.”
Daniel whispered:
“Then why did he never contact me?”
“Maybe because you destroyed evidence.”
Fair.
Maya walked toward Evan.
Her face stayed hard.
“Did you ever fake anything with me?”
“No.”
“Did you ask me out because of Dad?”
“No.”
“Did you stay because of Dad?”
Evan swallowed.
“Partly.”
She flinched.
He continued quickly:
“I thought if I broke up right after finding out, you’d ask why. I was scared.”
“You chose access over honesty.”
“Yes.”
Daniel looked at me.
He heard himself in that answer.
Good.
Maya did too.
She laughed bitterly.
“Perfect.”
Then the front porch light went out.
One bulb.
Pop.
Second bulb.
Pop.
Not power.
Shot out.
Daniel reached for the gun.
Evan grabbed Maya and pulled her behind the wall.
A third crack.
The living room lamp exploded through the window.
Glass sprayed.
I dropped.
Daniel shouted:
“Down!”
We hit the floor.
Then silence.
No more shots.
Daniel crawled to the wall.
He looked outside through a narrow gap.
Nothing.
Evan shielded Maya with his body.
She noticed.
So did I.
Daniel’s phone buzzed.
Mercer.
Daniel did not answer.
A voicemail arrived.
He played it.
Paul’s voice.
Calm.
Friendly.
“Dan, call me. I think somebody may be watching your house.”
Evan laughed under his breath.
Then Maya’s phone vibrated.
New message from Paul:
ARE YOU SAFE?
She stared.
Then typed:
HOW DO YOU KNOW SOMETHING HAPPENED?
Daniel grabbed her wrist.
“Don’t send.”
Too late.
Delivered.
Three dots appeared immediately.
Paul replied:
DANIEL CALLED ME.
Daniel’s face drained.
“I didn’t.”
Maya looked at him.
“Then he’s lying.”
A second message arrived.
WHO IS EVAN CROSS?
No one had told Paul Evan’s last name.
Daniel whispered:
May you like
“He already knows exactly who he is.”
CUT.
