Chapter 14 - Laura Cross

St. Vincent looked different the second time.

Not abandoned.

Occupied.

Federal floodlights showed fresh tire marks behind the service entrance.

Karen’s team found a generator running under the east wing.

Power to lower levels only.

Daniel stared at the building.

“He’s here.”

Karen said:

“Or was.”

Evan held the Vault C card.

His hands shook.

Maya touched his shoulder.

He looked at her.

“You should stay outside.”

She stared.

“Try again.”

He almost smiled.

“No.”

That was growth.

Not control.

Fear stated honestly.

Maya said:

“I’m staying with Mom.”

Good.

I did not argue.

Daniel and Evan went with the federal team.

Karen let me monitor from command.

Audio live.

Basement.

Archive B.

Hidden elevator behind shelving.

Key card Vault C.

Evan swiped.

Green.

Elevator descended one level.

No public floor plan.

Private records vault.

Rows of fireproof cabinets.

A safe room.

Medical cot.

Food.

Clothes.

Fresh.

Then Daniel’s voice:

“Laura?”

Silence.

Evan:

“Mom?”

A movement.

Door.

Woman stepped out.

Karen’s body camera feed showed her.

Laura Cross.

Alive.

Older.

Thin.

Pale.

Gun in hand.

She pointed at Daniel.

“Stop.”

He stopped.

Evan stepped forward.

“Mom.”

Her gun dropped.

Not to the floor.

Just down.

She stared at him.

Nineteen years collapsed into her face.

“Evan.”

He walked closer.

She did not.

Like touching him would prove too much.

He said:

“You’re alive.”

“I’m sorry.”

“You watched me.”

“Yes.”

“You never came.”

“I couldn’t.”

“You could have tried.”

“I did.”

“Not enough.”

Her face folded.

“No.”

Evan stopped an arm’s length away.

Then Laura reached up.

Touched his eyeliner-smudged cheek.

He closed his eyes.

No hug.

Not yet.

Daniel looked away.

Then Laura saw Maya on the remote monitor feed being relayed from command.

Her face changed.

“She’s here?”

Evan said:

“Safe.”

Laura stared at Maya’s image.

She knew her.

Too quickly.

I noticed.

Maya did too.

“How do you know me?”

Laura looked at Daniel.

Then at me through the camera.

“Because Maya is the reason Paul came after me again.”

My pulse kicked.

Daniel said:

“What does that mean?”

Laura walked to a cabinet.

Opened a file.

Photographs of Maya from infancy through high school.

I stopped breathing.

Paul had tracked her for years.

Laura said:

“Paul believed Daniel hid something inside his family after I disappeared.”

“The ledger.”

“Yes.”

“He thought Maya had it.”

“Eventually.”

“What did he think first?”

Laura looked at Daniel.

“Blood.”

Daniel’s face tightened.

Maya stared at the screen.

“What blood?”

Laura’s eyes filled.

“Paul spent years wondering whether Sarah’s daughter was his.”

My stomach turned.

“We already know she isn’t.”

“Yes.”

“Then why keep watching her?”

“Because the first DNA test was not the only test.”

Daniel went still.

“What?”

Laura pulled a lab copy.

Maya Miller.

Paul Mercer.

Excluded.

Then another comparison.

Name redacted.

Result:

Paternal relationship supported.

My heart stopped.

Daniel’s face went white.

“What is that?”

Laura closed the file.

“Not now.”

I nearly shouted through the monitor.

“No.”

Karen looked at me.

I grabbed the command microphone.

“Laura.”

She turned toward the camera.

“You do not get to come back from the dead and ration my daughter’s paternity.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

Maya whispered:

“Mom.”

Laura looked wrecked.

“I’m not trying to.”

“Then say the name.”

She shook her head.

“Because the result may be wrong.”

I stared.

“What?”

“Paul had access to the lab.”

Of course.

Another poisoned record.

Laura continued:

“That is why Daniel retested against Paul separately.”

I looked at Daniel.

“You knew about a second alleged father.”

He said nothing.

There.

Again.

I wanted to reach through the screen.

Laura said:

“Sarah, Paul used uncertainty to control Daniel.”

“Who was the comparison?”

Laura looked at Daniel.

He looked at the floor.

Maya’s face changed.

“Dad.”

He whispered:

“Richard Cross.”

Everyone froze.

Evan stared.

“What?”

Daniel looked at him.

“I thought Richard might be Maya’s father.”

The room seemed to implode.

I stared at the screen.

“That is impossible.”

“I know.”

“When would I have been with Richard?”

“You weren’t.”

“Then why test?”

Daniel looked at Laura.

She answered:

“Because Paul planted a story that Richard had assaulted Sarah at a department fundraiser.”

My blood went cold.

No.

Daniel said quickly:

“I never believed it.”

“You tested our daughter.”

“Because Paul produced a fake witness statement.”

Maya’s face drained.

Evan looked sick.

Laura said:

“Richard never touched Sarah.”

“Thank you.”

My voice shook.

“Anyone else want to invent sexual crimes around my life?”

Silence.

Good.

Laura closed the lab file.

“The test Paul showed Daniel was fabricated.”

“So Maya’s paternity was never actually uncertain.”

“Not based on real evidence.”

Daniel looked at me.

“I should have told you.”

I laughed.

Beyond anger now.

Then a cabinet alarm chirped.

Laura spun.

“Paul.”

Daniel raised his gun.

Vault door indicator.

Access attempt.

Mercer badge.

Karen shouted through radio:

“All teams move!”

Laura grabbed a drive.

“This is the full insurance ledger.”

Evan stared.

“You had it.”

“Copy.”

“Original?”

“Gone from the wedding frame.”

“Paul.”

“Yes.”

Maya whispered through command feed:

“Then why is he here?”

Laura looked at the vault door.

“Because he thinks this copy can still convict him.”

A gunshot struck the outer lock.

Daniel pushed Evan behind a cabinet.

Laura moved to the opposite side.

Federal agents converged.

Mercer’s voice came through the hall:

“Laura.”

She closed her eyes.

Nineteen years of fear in one breath.

He continued:

“Give me the drive.”

Daniel whispered:

“Paul.”

Mercer laughed.

“Still cleaning up after me, Dan?”

Then:

“And Evan?”

Evan’s jaw tightened.

“I’m here.”

Mercer’s voice softened.

“My son.”

Evan flinched.

Laura whispered:

“Don’t answer him.”

Mercer said:

“Ask your mother why she never told you what Richard hid in Daniel’s wedding frame.”

Evan looked at Laura.

She stared at the drive.

Mercer continued:

“Ask Sarah why Maya’s DNA is in the same file.”

My chest tightened.

Then the vault lights died.

May you like

Gunfire cracked.

CUT.
