Chapter 13 - The Abandoned Garage

We did not rush in.

That was Daniel’s first useful decision all morning.

Karen established perimeter.

Drone.

Thermal scan.

One heat signature inside the main bay.

Another in an office.

No movement.

Evan stared at the feed.

“Could be my mom.”

Daniel said:

“Could be heaters.”

“Stop.”

“I’m keeping you from deciding before evidence.”

Evan looked away.

Maya stood beside him.

Not touching.

Still there.

Federal team entered through two points.

We stayed behind a concrete barrier.

Radio:

“Bay clear.”

“Office clear.”

“Second level clear.”

Then:

“Female located.”

Evan moved.

Karen blocked him.

“Wait.”

“Is it Laura?”

“Wait.”

Seconds stretched.

Then the team leader came out.

“Maya Miller.”

Every head turned.

Maya stared.

“What?”

Inside the office was not Laura.

It was a life-size photograph of Maya taped to a chair.

A mock hostage.

Mercer had staged the scene.

On the chair:

Maya’s silver bracelet.

Charm intact.

Evan whispered:

“He wanted us here.”

Daniel inspected without touching.

“What else?”

A recorder.

Karen played.

Mercer’s voice.

“Dan, you’ve always been sentimental about old buildings.”

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“Evan, your mother was sentimental too.”

Evan stared.

“Sarah, if you’re listening, ask Daniel whether he ever told you Paul Mercer once had a key to your first apartment.”

My skin tightened.

Daniel looked at me.

I stared.

“Later.”

He almost smiled grimly.

Fair.

Mercer continued:

“The charm never held the ledger.”

Maya looked at Daniel.

He had guessed right.

“Richard moved it years ago.”

Evan stepped closer.

Mercer:

“Laura moved it again.”

Then:

“And now she has made the same mistake she always makes.”

Pause.

“She came back for her son.”

Evan’s face broke.

“She’s here.”

Recorder clicked off.

A sound came from behind the garage wall.

Metal.

Scrape.

Agents aimed.

Hidden service door.

Inside:

A small room.

Mattress.

Water.

Medical kit.

Recent food.

Not prisoner chains.

Safe hideout.

Laura had been here willingly at some point.

On the wall:

Photographs of Evan.

School.

Work.

With Maya.

Dozens.

He stopped.

“She watched me.”

Maya whispered:

“Like you watched my family.”

That landed.

Evan nodded.

Fair.

One photo showed Laura across from Maya’s community college.

Three weeks ago.

Another showed Paul Mercer across the street.

Watching Laura watch Evan.

Predator chain.

Daniel stared.

“He found her.”

Karen found a laptop.

Encrypted.

Evan knew the password.

“Richard.”

Wrong.

“Evan.”

Wrong.

Maya said:

“Try Hawthorne.”

Unlocked.

Folders.

Laura’s evidence.

Insurance ledger scans.

Vulnerability files.

Mercer payments.

Then a video timestamped yesterday.

Laura appeared.

Alive.

Different room.

“This is for Evan.”

He leaned closer.

“Paul found me again.”

Evan’s hand shook.

“He believes Richard hid the original insurance ledger in Daniel Miller’s family.”

Daniel looked at me.

Wedding frame.

“He thinks Maya has it because Paul put Richard’s charm on her years ago to keep it close without realizing Richard had already moved the microfilm.”

Maya whispered:

“He used me as storage.”

Laura continued:

“Paul chose Maya because Daniel would never search a gift from his closest friend.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

True.

“Richard moved the microfilm behind Daniel and Sarah’s wedding photograph.”

Too late now.

Paul had it.

Laura said:

“But the microfilm is not the only copy.”

Karen leaned closer.

“There.”

Laura held up a key card.

St. Vincent.

“Archive level B.”

We had been there.

But she continued:

“Below level B is a private records vault.”

Daniel stared.

“We missed a level.”

Evan whispered:

“Mom.”

Laura said:

“I am going there now. If Paul is following me, I need him to believe I’m carrying the only backup.”

Her face tightened.

“Evan, do not come after me.”

He laughed once.

“Yeah, no.”

Maya looked at him.

“Obviously.”

Laura continued:

“Daniel, if Evan ignores me, keep him alive.”

Daniel stared at the screen.

Laura knew him.

Trusted him once.

Enough to make that request.

Then:

“Sarah, I know you have no reason to trust me.”

I went still.

“Your husband did not have an affair with me.”

Again.

Why keep saying it?

Because she knew the photograph looked intimate.

Because she knew Paul used sexual suspicion as control.

Laura continued:

“But Daniel’s silence gave Paul room.”

Daniel flinched.

Good.

Then Laura looked off camera.

A voice somewhere behind her.

Male.

Mercer.

Faint.

“You should have stayed dead.”

Laura’s face went white.

Video ended.

Maya whispered:

“He found her while she was recording.”

Karen checked metadata.

File uploaded automatically from St. Vincent.

“Before dinner.”

Evan grabbed the key card.

“We go back.”

Karen nodded.

“Now we know where.”

Then Maya reached into the chair under the fake hostage photo.

Something taped beneath.

A second St. Vincent card.

On it:

VAULT C.

Evan’s face changed.

“My mother left that.”

Daniel looked at Maya.

“How do you know?”

Maya turned it over.

Written in black marker:

FOR EVAN.

Then another line:

IF PAUL GETS THERE FIRST, HE WILL FINISH WHAT HE STARTED WITH ME.

Daniel looked at Karen.

“How old is this card?”

“Recent marker.”

Evan turned it under the light.

A smear of fresh black ink.

Laura had been in the garage recently enough to leave it.

Maya said:

“She wanted Evan to find it.”

“Yes,” I said.

Daniel scanned the room again.

“Then this wasn’t Paul’s trap alone.”

Evan looked at him.

“What?”

“Laura may have used Paul’s own surveillance against him.”

Karen nodded slowly.

“She knew he would track Richard’s archive sites.”

Evan’s face tightened.

“So she planted a route.”

“To St. Vincent.”

“To herself.”

Maya looked at him.

“Or to evidence.”

Evan exhaled.

“Same thing to Paul.”

That was the ugly truth.

Laura had spent nineteen years becoming inseparable from the evidence Mercer wanted destroyed.

Karen’s agent called from the laptop.

“More on the video metadata.”

“What?”

“Upload routed through a closed St. Vincent server.”

Daniel nodded.

“She was there.”

“Not just there. The server is still live.”

I stared.

“Someone maintains it.”

“Exactly.”

Then another file appeared in the laptop cache.

Automatic sync.

A still image.

Laura entering an elevator.

Timestamp:

Forty-seven minutes ago.

Evan’s face went white.

“Now.”

Not yesterday.

Not three months ago.

Now.

Karen grabbed the radio.

“All teams to St. Vincent.”

Daniel looked at Evan.

“You stay behind the first line.”

“No.”

“You want to reach your mother alive?”

Evan stared.

Daniel continued:

“Then stop making me fight you while I’m trying to get you there.”

Evan’s jaw tightened.

Then he nodded.

Maya whispered:

“Look at that. Communication.”

Nobody laughed.

But for one second, the room breathed.

Then the laptop chimed again.

A live camera image.

St. Vincent basement.

Laura tied to a chair.

Paul Mercer standing behind her.

He looked directly into the lens.

May you like

And smiled.

CUT.
