Chapter 9 - What Daniel Destroyed

Daniel put the St. Vincent key card inside an evidence sleeve.
I watched him seal it.
“Now tell me about the motel tape.”
He looked at me.
“Sarah.”
“No more later.”
Karen pretended not to listen.
Maya didn’t.
Evan didn’t.
Good.
Witnesses.
Daniel sat.
“The Hawthorne had one exterior camera.”
“Laura on it.”
“Yes.”
“Mercer too.”
“Yes.”
“You destroyed the tape.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Laura asked me to.”
Evan laughed.
“Of course.”
Daniel looked at him.
“She believed whoever had access to police evidence would track her.”
“Meaning Paul.”
“She did not name him.”
“Stop protecting him with technicalities.”
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“I am protecting the case we are building now.”
Evan looked away.
Daniel continued:
“I pulled the tape before formal collection.”
Karen’s head snapped up.
“You stole evidence.”
“Yes.”
“What did you do?”
“Made one still frame.”
“The cropped image.”
“Yes.”
“Then?”
“Destroyed the cassette.”
“How?”
“Burned it.”
My stomach turned.
“You burned surveillance evidence.”
“Yes.”
“For a woman you barely knew.”
“For a witness who believed police would kill her.”
“And you never told me.”
“No.”
“What else did you keep?”
He looked toward his office.
“One thing.”
I laughed without humor.
“There is always one thing.”
We drove home under federal watch.
The camera across the street had been removed.
Not by us.
Mounting screws empty.
Mercer cleaning.
Daniel opened a wall safe behind his office bookshelf.
He removed an envelope.
Old.
Yellowed.
HAWTHORNE.
Inside:
One photograph.
Laura entering the motel.
Daniel had cropped close around her.
He turned it over.
Nothing.
Evan stared.
“This is it?”
“The original print.”
“You said Paul was behind her.”
“Not in this crop.”
Karen held the print under light.
“Where is the negative?”
Daniel froze.
I stared.
“What?”
“I forgot.”
He opened the envelope seam.
Inside, taped flat behind cardboard, a negative strip.
Evan whispered:
“You kept it.”
“Apparently.”
Karen almost smiled.
“Best mistake you made all night.”
We scanned it.
Full frame.
Laura entering.
Twenty seconds behind, according to timestamp.
Paul Mercer.
Gun visible beneath coat.
Daniel stared.
“I never saw that.”
Evan looked at him.
“Because you cropped him out.”
“I cropped around Laura before enlarging.”
“You still destroyed the tape.”
“Yes.”
Maya said:
“Could this prove Paul followed her?”
Karen nodded.
“It proves proximity. Not intent.”
“Enough to pressure.”
“Yes.”
Daniel opened another frame.
Mercer leaving thirty minutes later.
Alone.
Then Laura leaving through rear exit forty minutes after that.
Alive.
The timeline contradicted the official story.
Evan leaned closer.
“My mom left after Paul.”
“Yes.”
“Then Daniel left her there and Paul found her anyway.”
Daniel’s face tightened.
“No.”
“He is literally on the tape.”
“Before I arrived.”
“How do you know?”
“Timestamp.”
Evan checked.
Daniel had entered after Mercer left.
That helped.
Not enough.
I said:
“Why did Paul know about my pregnancy?”
Daniel froze.
We were back there.
He could no longer outrun it.
Maya sat beside me.
Her hand found mine.
Daniel spoke slowly.
“When Laura disappeared, I requested internal access logs.”
“To what?”
“Witness records. My case files. Our personal records.”
“Our?”
“You and me.”
“Why?”
“I thought somebody was checking my vulnerabilities.”
“And?”
“Your clinic file had been opened.”
“By Paul.”
“His badge ID.”
My stomach tightened.
“How far into the pregnancy?”
“Ten weeks.”
I remembered.
Eleven weeks when I lost it.
Blood at 3 a.m.
Daniel driving too fast.
White hospital ceiling.
Nurse saying these things happen.
I had believed her.
Maybe I still should.
Daniel continued:
“I confronted Paul.”
“What did he say?”
“Routine conflict check.”
“Did you believe him?”
“No.”
“What happened next?”
He looked at his hands.
“You miscarried four days later.”
Maya squeezed harder.
I could barely breathe.
“Did you think Paul caused it?”
“I didn’t know.”
“Did you investigate?”
“Yes.”
“What did you find?”
“Nothing.”
“Then why hide it?”
“Because he wanted me to know he could reach you.”
“That is your interpretation.”
“Yes.”
“Not proof.”
“No.”
I stood.
Good.
At least truth had edges now.
“I will not let you rewrite my miscarriage into a murder because it fits your guilt.”
Daniel flinched.
“I’m not.”
“You did for nineteen years in your head.”
He looked down.
Maya said:
“Mom.”
“I’m okay.”
I was not.
But that was mine.
Evan opened Laura’s video files.
“There’s one more.”
File date three months ago.
LAURA_07.
He played.
Laura looked tired.
“Evan, Daniel thinks Paul only threatened Sarah.”
Daniel went still.
Laura continued:
“He never knew Paul was the reason Richard Cross died.”
Evan’s face emptied.
Maya stared.
Daniel whispered:
“No.”
Laura said:
“Richard found the vehicle Paul used. City fleet blue. He copied the disposal record.”
Karen looked at the photo of Richard’s wreck.
Blue scrape.
Laura continued:
“Paul did not drive the vehicle that hit Richard.”
Evan leaned closer.
“He paid someone.”
Laura nodded from the screen as if answering.
“The driver was part of the insurance ring.”
Evan covered his mouth.
Then Laura said:
“Richard knew Evan was not his biological son.”
Evan’s eyes filled.
“He chose him anyway.”
Silence.
Laura continued:
“He died because he refused to hand Paul the evidence that proved it.”
Video ended.
Evan sat.
Maya crouched beside him.
This time she took his hand.
He let her.
Daniel looked at Karen.
“We need St. Vincent.”
She nodded.
“Outside team only.”
Then Maya’s phone buzzed from the evidence table.
A location ping.
Her missing bracelet had a tracker.
Old family app.
Daniel had forgotten.
Map.
One point moving.
Heading east.
Toward St. Vincent.
Then it stopped.
Maya whispered:
“He took the bracelet there.”
Daniel stared at the map.
“Or wants us to think he did.”
Evan stood.
“Either way, we go.”
Karen held up a hand.
“We go with a warrant and people Paul does not control.”
Daniel nodded.
“No local dispatch.”
Maya looked at me.
“Can I come?”
“No.”
She stared.
I almost laughed at how much she sounded like me when she hated an answer.
“Mom.”
“You were kidnapped tonight.”
“And that is why I know what Paul’s holding areas look like.”
Daniel started to object.
I stopped him.
“She has information.”
Maya looked surprised.
I continued:
“She still stays behind the entry team.”
“That’s fair.”
Daniel stared at me.
“What?”
“Nothing.”
“No. Say it.”
He shook his head.
“You’re better at this than I am.”
“Remember that next time you hide nineteen years of crime from me.”
Evan almost smiled.
Then the tracker moved again.
One block.
Two.
Stopped.
St. Vincent.
Karen’s expression hardened.
“He wants us there now.”
Daniel checked the Hawthorne negative one more time.
Paul in frame.
Gun visible.
Laura alive after official death.
Richard dead later.
Maya taken tonight.
Every road led to the same man.
Evan looked at the location.
May you like
“Either way, we go.”
CUT.
