Chapter 12 - Vanessa's Real Plan

We flew back to Cincinnati before dawn.

I spent the flight calling Vanessa.

No answer.

Aaron answered once.

"Don't come to headquarters."

"You are getting very repetitive."

"Vanessa has the index. She says she can stop the merger."

"Do you believe her?"

Silence.

"Aaron."

"I believe she hates Dad more than she loves any of us."

That answer frightened me because it sounded true.

When we landed, Claire went straight to Lily, who had been moved to Evan's sister's home under private security.

I went to Hayes Development.

The board meeting was already assembling on the forty-second floor.

Vanessa waited in my office.

She wore the same blue suit she had worn the day we signed our prenuptial agreement.

"You left us in Santa Fe."

"I left you with Emily."

"That's not better."

"No. But it was necessary."

I closed the door.

"Tell me the real plan."

Vanessa looked tired.

"Destroy the Foundation."

"That part I know."

"And seize the Calder payout before it disappears."

There it was.

"For what?"

"Restitution."

"To whom?"

"The families your father ruined."

"You mean your mother's estate."

Her jaw tightened.

"Mine included."

"How much?"

"Enough."

"That is not a number."

"One hundred eighty-two million dollars."

I stared at her.

"You planned to divert one hundred eighty-two million dollars."

"Into a trust controlled by victims' counsel."

"Without telling me."

"Would you have agreed?"

I wanted to say yes.

I couldn't.

She gave me a sad smile.

"Exactly."

I walked to the window.

Cincinnati spread beneath us, gray in the morning rain.

"Did you ever love me?"

Vanessa's face changed.

"That is a cruel question."

"It is also overdue."

She looked down.

"I married you because getting inside the Hayes family gave me access I could not get any other way."

My chest hurt anyway, even after everything.

"And after?"

"After, I loved Lily."

"Not what I asked."

Her eyes filled.

"Sometimes I loved you. Sometimes I hated you for being able to remain decent inside a system your money protected. Sometimes I hated myself for needing you to stay blind."

That was worse than a clean lie.

I believed her.

The boardroom phone chimed.

Vote in ten minutes.

Vanessa handed me the decryption wafer.

"There is something else."

"Of course there is."

"Claire did not disappear because of the archive alone."

I froze.

"What else?"

Vanessa looked toward the conference room.

"She found a file labeled D.H."

"Me?"

"Yes."

"What was in it?"

Vanessa swallowed.

"A signed guardianship petition prepared by your father."

"Against who?"

"You."

The boardroom doors opened.

At the far end of the table sat a Calder attorney.

Beside him was a judge I recognized from childhood family dinners.

Vanessa whispered, "Daniel, your father never planned for you to inherit Hayes Development. He planned to have you declared incompetent the moment you stopped obeying him."
