Chapter 19 - Blackthorn House Burns

We reached Blackthorn House at 4:17 in the morning.

The storage-room lights were on.

Smoke curled from the east wing.

"He's burning the evidence," Emily said.

I ran inside.

Claire shouted my name behind me.

The house alarm screamed.

Sprinklers had not activated.

Of course they hadn't.

My father had designed the systems.

He knew how to kill them.

The storage room was empty.

The wardrobe lay on its side.

The hole I had hammered through the wall looked black in the smoke.

Inside the hidden room, Richard stood beside the cot.

He held a metal case.

"Dad!"

He turned.

For the first time, he looked old.

Not powerful.

Not terrifying.

Just tired.

"You should be with your daughter."

"You should have thought of that before you put her in a subject file."

He looked at the steel walls.

"This room kept your mother alive."

"Then you used rooms like it to destroy other people."

"I used what worked."

"That's the problem."

The fire cracked above us.

Richard lifted the case.

"Original records. Subject One through Seven. Paper. Not copied."

Claire entered behind me.

"Put them down."

Richard smiled at her.

"You always did mistake information for justice."

"And you mistook secrecy for love."

That landed.

He looked away.

Smoke thickened.

Emily appeared in the doorway with Vanessa.

Richard looked at all of us.

His victims.

His children.

His legacy.

"If those records survive, Helen becomes a headline."

I understood why he had come back.

Not Lily.

My mother's file.

The first justification.

The story he could not bear anyone else to tell.

"Give me the case," I said.

"You will expose her."

"No."

"You cannot promise that."

"I can promise we will stop you from deciding alone."

His mouth tightened.

The ceiling groaned.

Claire shouted, "We have to go!"

Richard stepped backward.

The floor beneath him cracked.

I lunged.

My hand caught his wrist.

For one insane second, I was holding the man who had held our entire family over an abyss for decades.

"Let go," he said.

"No."

"Daniel."

"Not this time."

Emily and Vanessa grabbed my arm.

Together, we pulled him up.

We escaped through the servants' corridor as flames consumed the east wing.

Outside, police took Richard into custody again.

He did not look at me.

The metal case survived.

At sunrise, I opened it with Claire, Emily, Vanessa, Aaron, and three investigators present.

Seven folders.

Subject One through Seven.

But beneath Claire's file was an eighth folder.

Not Lily.

The label read:

DANIEL HAYES.

Inside was a psychiatric evaluation dated two weeks after Emily's disappearance.

At the bottom, beneath my father's signature, was another signature.

Claire's.

I looked at her.

She whispered, "Daniel, I can explain."
