Chapter 14 - The Sister Who Took the Money

Emily did not run.
That almost made it worse.
She sat in my boardroom while one hundred eighty-two million dollars of Foundation money moved into a trust under her control.
"Give it back," I said.
"No."
Claire stood between us.
"Emily, this was supposed to be restitution."
"It still is."
Vanessa looked furious.
"You changed the administrator without telling me."
"Because you were about to make the same mistake Dad always made."
"Which mistake?"
"Thinking control is harmless when you are the one holding it."
Vanessa laughed.
"So your solution was to take control yourself?"
Emily's face hardened.
"Temporary control."
I pointed at her.
"That phrase should be carved over every steel door my father built."
Silence.
Emily looked at me differently after that.
Then she opened the trust documents.
The money could not be withdrawn by her alone.
It required three signatures: hers, a court-appointed victims' representative, and Claire's.
Claire recoiled.
"Mine?"
"You are Subject Seven. The last adult subject."
"I did not agree to this."
"No."
"Then remove me."
Emily nodded.
"I will."
Vanessa stared.
"You are just going to change it?"
"Consent is supposed to change outcomes. That is the point."
For the first time, I saw the difference between Emily and my father.
Small.
Fragile.
But real.
Then Claire's phone rang.
Lily's security detail.
Claire answered.
Her face drained of color.
"What?"
She looked at me.
"Lily is gone."
The room exploded into motion.
Evan's sister had taken Lily into the backyard for ten minutes.
A delivery van stopped near the alley.
Two men in utility uniforms entered through the side gate.
No gunshots.
No struggle.
Just an empty yard and Lily's red sweater on the grass.
I called my father.
His old number was disconnected.
Aaron called every property manager in the city.
Emily opened the subject network.
Vanessa stood completely still.
"No," she whispered.
I turned.
"What?"
"The storage room."
"What about it?"
"Lily wasn't supposed to find the knocking by accident."
Claire stared at her.
"What are you saying?"
Vanessa closed her eyes.
"Someone wanted her to discover Claire."
The idea hit me like a physical blow.
The hidden wall.
The knocking.
The timing.
My early return from work.
Vanessa dragging Lily.
Everything had felt chaotic.
Maybe it had been staged.
Aaron's phone chimed.
A new video file.
Lily appeared on screen sitting in a bright room, unharmed, clutching her stuffed rabbit.
A man's voice spoke from behind the camera.
"Daniel, bring Subject Seven to the first house."
Claire whispered, "What first house?"
I knew.
The first home my grandfather ever built.
A boarded-up estate outside Covington.
The place my father called "the beginning."
Then Lily looked past the camera and said something that made all of us freeze.
"Grandpa, can I go home now?"
