Chapter 4 - The Hayes Rooms

I wanted Vanessa arrested.

I wanted Claire in a hospital.

I wanted someone to tell me there was a reasonable explanation for the words HAYES-07 beneath my wife's skin.

Instead, Claire asked for coffee.

That almost broke me more than anything else.

She sat in Evan's office wearing borrowed scrubs, both hands wrapped around a paper cup, while Lily slept on a couch beneath my coat.

"Tell me where you've been for three years," I said.

Claire stared into the coffee.

"Not all of it is three years."

"What does that mean?"

"I was free for the first eight months."

Vanessa closed her eyes.

I looked between them.

"You two planned this."

Claire's voice cracked. "We planned my disappearance. Not what came after."

I sat down because my knees suddenly felt unreliable.

Claire told me she had found ledgers in my late father's office two weeks before her car went into the river.

My father, Richard Hayes, had spent forty years building luxury developments across Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana. He had been praised for historic restoration and philanthropic housing programs.

According to Claire, some of those homes contained sealed rooms not shown on public plans.

"Safe rooms?" I asked.

"Containment rooms."

Vanessa said the words.

I turned on her.

She did not look away.

Claire continued.

The Hayes Foundation had quietly partnered with private doctors, family attorneys, and judges to handle what my father called "domestic crises."

A wealthy heir drinking too much.

A wife threatening divorce with damaging information.

A sibling refusing to sign away voting shares.

A teenager who knew something embarrassing.

The official solution was treatment.

The private solution was isolation.

"You are saying my father kidnapped people."

Claire shook her head.

"Sometimes they signed papers. Sometimes their relatives signed for them. Sometimes the papers were forged."

"And the rooms?"

"Temporary, supposedly. Hours. Days. Until transport. Until sedation. Until lawyers arrived."

"Supposedly?"

She looked at me.

"I found six names before mine."

My mouth went dry.

HAYES-07.

"Who were they?"

"Three are dead. One vanished. One changed her name. One is someone you know."

I stared at Claire.

"Who?"

Before she answered, Vanessa spoke.

"Your sister."

The room disappeared around me.

Emily Hayes had died when I was nineteen.

At least that was what I had been told.

She had struggled after college. Panic attacks. Pills. A breakdown at a family wedding.

My father sent her to a private facility in Vermont.

Six months later, he told me she had overdosed.

Closed casket.

No funeral photographs.

I remembered being furious that he would not let me see her.

"Emily is dead."

Vanessa's eyes filled.

"No."

"Don't."

"Daniel-"

"Do not say that unless you can prove it."

Claire reached into the pocket of her borrowed scrubs and pulled out a folded piece of paper Evan had let her keep from the clothes she wore in the room.

On it was a phone number and two words.

SUBJECT TWO.

"She called me six months before I disappeared," Claire said.

I looked at the number.

The area code was New Mexico.

"Emily is alive?"

Claire nodded.

Then she said, "And she is the one who told me your father never died either."
