Chapter 2 - Behind the Closet

Ethan did not ask Sophie what she meant.
He picked her up and started toward the stairs.
Vanessa moved in front of him.
“Don’t.”
The word came out too fast.
Ethan stopped.
“Move.”
“You’re frightening her.”
“No. You are.”
Vanessa’s eyes changed.
The polished wife disappeared for half a second, and Ethan saw calculation underneath.
“Sophie had a nightmare,” she said. “There is no man.”
Sophie lifted her face from Ethan’s shoulder.
“He sleeps behind my dresses.”
Vanessa went white.
Ethan climbed the stairs.
Vanessa followed.
At Sophie’s bedroom door, Ethan set his daughter behind him.
The room looked normal.
Pink blanket.
Stuffed rabbit.
Crayons on the floor.
Then Sophie pointed at the built-in wardrobe.
“Back there.”
Ethan pulled dresses aside.
At first, he saw only wood paneling.
Then he noticed scratches around one brass screw.
He yanked the panel.
It opened two inches.
A smell rolled out.
Sweat.
Dust.
Blood.
Vanessa ran.
Ethan caught her wrist before she reached the hall.
“Laura!” he shouted.
His younger sister had been staying in the guest wing with her son for the week. She appeared at the far end of the hall, startled.
“Take Sophie downstairs. Call 911.”
Vanessa twisted against him.
“Ethan, listen to me.”
“No.”
Laura pulled Sophie close.
Ethan shoved the hidden panel open.
A narrow service space ran behind the wardrobe.
A man sat against the wall.
His wrists were bound with plastic ties.
One eye was swollen.
There was dried blood at his temple.
But Ethan recognized him from the photograph his investigator had shown him two days earlier.
Daniel Cross.
Vanessa’s first husband.
Daniel lifted his head.
“Close the door.”
Ethan stared.
“What?”
“Close it before she calls them.”
Vanessa stopped fighting.
That frightened Ethan more than anything.
“Calls who?”
Daniel looked at her.
“The people who taught her how to do this.”
Sirens sounded outside.
Too fast.
Far too fast for Laura’s call.
Vanessa exhaled.
Then she smiled.
“I already called.”
Ethan turned toward her.
“When?”
“Before you walked into the kitchen.”
The front door burst open downstairs.
“Sheriff’s Department!”
Daniel closed his eyes.
“Here we go.”
Boots thundered up the stairs.
Two deputies appeared with weapons lowered but ready.
Vanessa immediately started crying.
“He attacked me,” she said. “He brought Daniel here to scare me. My stepdaughter isn’t safe.”
Ethan stared at her.
A deputy looked into the hidden space.
Then at Daniel.
His face hardened.
“Daniel Cross?”
Daniel did not answer.
The deputy reached for his cuffs.
“You’re under arrest for the attempted murder of Vanessa Cross.”
Ethan looked at Vanessa.
She had stopped crying.
And in that moment, he understood something terrifying.
The police had not arrived to rescue the man behind the wall.
They had arrived to protect the story Vanessa had prepared years ago.
