Chapter 3 - The Bruises on the Wrong Date

By 2:00 a.m., Ethan was sitting in a sheriff’s interview room while someone from Child Protective Services photographed bruises on his daughter.

Sophie was down the hall with Laura.

Vanessa was in another room giving a statement.

Daniel was in custody.

Ethan had never felt more powerless.

A social worker named Dana Ruiz sat across from him.

“I need you to understand something,” she said. “Sophie made a direct allegation of physical harm against her stepmother.”

“I heard it.”

“She also has injuries in multiple stages of healing.”

“I know.”

Dana watched him carefully.

“Then why wasn’t this reported?”

The question landed where it should.

Ethan looked down.

“Because I wanted to believe explanations that made my life easier.”

Dana said nothing.

“I found one bruise last week. Then another. I started checking stories. I hired someone to look into Vanessa.”

“That investigator found Daniel Cross?”

“He found Daniel’s case.”

Dana slid a folder across the table.

“Vanessa provided these tonight.”

Inside were pediatric visit summaries.

Photos.

Behavior notes.

One sentence made Ethan’s pulse change.

Child becomes anxious when father raises voice.

Another:

Possible accidental injury during nighttime episode involving father.

Ethan looked up.

“What is this?”

“Vanessa says you drink when you travel home from business dinners.”

“I barely drink.”

“She says Sophie becomes afraid of you.”

Ethan laughed once, without humor.

“Ask Sophie.”

“We will.”

He turned another page.

There was a photograph of a bruise beneath Sophie’s shoulder blade.

Documented three weeks earlier.

Ethan checked the date.

His hands went cold.

“I was in Tokyo.”

Dana looked at him.

“What?”

“That date. I was in Tokyo for five days. My passport is at home. My company has flight records.”

Dana leaned forward.

“Who signed the note?”

Ethan looked at the bottom.

Dr. Helena Ward.

Sophie’s pediatrician.

A doctor Vanessa had recommended.

Dana took the folder back.

“That matters.”

“Then let me take my daughter home.”

“I can’t tonight.”

His chest tightened.

“Why?”

“Because Vanessa filed for an emergency protective order before deputies arrived.”

Ethan stared.

Dana continued quietly.

“She alleges that both you and Daniel are dangerous, and until the judge reviews the evidence, Sophie needs a temporary placement.”

“With who?”

Dana hesitated.

“Your mother.”

Margaret Bennett.

Ethan hated the idea of Sophie leaving with anyone.

But Margaret lived ten minutes away, adored Sophie, and had no criminal history.

He forced himself to nod.

When Dana stood, Ethan looked again at the medical record.

The date.

Tokyo.

Dr. Ward’s signature.

Something was wrong with more than Vanessa’s story.

Someone had started building a case against him while he was on the other side of the world.

And according to the timestamp, the first false note had been entered two days before Ethan ever noticed a bruise.
