Chapter 9 - The Order Came From My Mother’s Phone

Owen survived with a broken wrist and three cracked ribs.
He also survived long enough to make everything worse.
“I wasn’t trying to kill anybody,” he told detectives.
Ethan stood behind the observation window with Mara.
Owen looked ashamed.
“The instruction was to bring Vanessa back to the Bennett house.”
“Whose instruction?” the detective asked.
Owen swallowed.
“Mrs. Bennett.”
Ethan closed his eyes.
Margaret’s phone showed the message.
So did Owen’s.
Bring Vanessa to me. No police. No lawyers. Do not let Ethan see her first.
Margaret denied sending it.
Normally, Ethan would have called that convenient.
Then a forensic technician found a remote-access profile hidden on Margaret’s phone.
Someone had been mirroring her messages for almost two years.
Greybridge.
Or someone using its tools.
Vanessa’s flash drive contained more than family files.
It contained payment records.
Pediatric specialists.
Custody evaluators.
Private investigators.
A retired judge.
And a deputy district attorney named Calvin Shaw, who had signed off on Daniel’s old case.
“This isn’t consulting,” Laura said.
“No,” Mara answered. “It’s infrastructure.”
Ethan looked at the list of children.
Some were teenagers now.
Some had been moved between homes after emergency hearings.
One name made Laura sit down.
CALEB BENNETT.
Her nine-year-old son.
A new file.
Opened yesterday.
Laura’s voice turned thin.
“They’re coming after me because I’m helping you.”
Ethan immediately called Margaret’s house.
No answer.
Again.
No answer.
He drove there with Laura and two deputies.
The side gate stood open.
Margaret was in the backyard, screaming Sophie’s name.
“She was right here!”
Ethan ran.
A small pink shoe lay beside the hedge.
No blood.
No broken fence.
The camera footage showed Sophie walking calmly through the gate holding a woman’s hand.
The woman wore a baseball cap and sunglasses.
Sophie was carrying her stuffed rabbit.
On the kitchen table, they found a piece of paper written in purple crayon.
DADDY,
I WENT WITH THE LADY BECAUSE MOMMY SENT HER.
LOVE SOPHIE
Ethan’s knees nearly gave out.
Claire had been dead for two years.
But someone had just used her to make Sophie leave willingly.
