Chapter 4 - My Mother Knew Vanessa First

Daniel’s public defender called Ethan at 8:12 the next morning.

Daniel wanted to speak with him.

Ethan almost refused.

Then the attorney said, “He says Vanessa didn’t choose you.”

Thirty minutes later, Ethan sat behind scratched plexiglass at the county jail.

Daniel looked worse in daylight.

Older than his forty-one years.

Tired in a way sleep did not fix.

“You hid in my daughter’s room,” Ethan said.

“I came to your house to warn you.”

“And ended up tied behind her closet.”

Daniel gave a bitter smile.

“She came home early.”

“How long were you there?”

“Two days.”

Ethan’s stomach turned.

“Sophie found me the first night. I told her to get you. She brought me crackers instead.”

That sounded exactly like Sophie.

Daniel leaned closer.

“Vanessa pushed me down the stairs, but she didn’t leave me there. She called police and told them I attacked her. By the time I woke up in the hospital, she had photos of bruises on herself, a therapist saying I was unstable, and statements from two neighbors I barely knew.”

“You ran.”

“I was stupid. Terrified. And she told me if I fought, she would destroy my sister’s custody case.”

Ethan said nothing.

Daniel slid a folded photograph through the slot below the glass.

A charity gala.

Vanessa in a white dress.

Beside her stood Margaret Bennett.

The date printed on the back was fourteen months before Ethan met Vanessa.

“My mother told me she first met Vanessa at our wedding.”

“Your mother lies better than Vanessa.”

Ethan looked up sharply.

“Careful.”

Daniel did not blink.

“You want careful, go home and keep believing people. You want your daughter safe, start checking dates.”

Ethan left the jail and drove straight to Margaret’s house.

Sophie was asleep on the couch under a yellow blanket.

Margaret met him in the study.

He put the photograph on her desk.

Her face changed.

Not confusion.

Recognition.

“You knew her.”

Margaret sat down slowly.

“It wasn’t what you think.”

“Then tell me what it was.”

After a long silence, she said, “After Claire died, I hired a family stabilization consultant.”

Ethan stared.

“My wife had been dead three months.”

“You weren’t functioning.”

“I was grieving.”

“You were missing meetings. Leaving Sophie with rotating staff. Sleeping two hours a night.”

“So you hired Vanessa?”

“I hired a firm. Greybridge Family Solutions.”

The name meant nothing to him.

Margaret looked at the photograph.

“Vanessa was one of their consultants.”

Ethan felt something inside him drop.

“You put her in my life.”

“I asked her to help with routines. Grief. Household structure.”

“And then she married me.”

Margaret’s voice cracked.

“That was never part of the agreement.”

Ethan pulled out his phone.

Laura had sent him bank records from the Bennett Family Office.

Payments to Greybridge.

Hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Some recent.

He turned the screen toward his mother.

“You said you hired them after Claire died.”

“I did.”

“You said you stopped?”

“Yes.”

“Then why did they receive fifty thousand dollars last month?”

Margaret looked at the transfer.

Her face went pale.

“That didn’t come from me.”

Ethan enlarged the authorization field.

The money had come from Sophie’s trust.

And the transfer carried his electronic signature.
