Chapter 6 - The Statements Sophie Was Taught to Say

Sophie did not understand the word coaching.

She understood games.

So Dana Ruiz turned the interview into one.

“Did Vanessa ever ask you to practice sentences?”

Sophie nodded.

“What kind?”

Sophie looked at Ethan through the observation glass she could not see through.

“Daddy gets mad after wine.”

Ethan shut his eyes.

Dana asked gently, “Does Daddy get mad after wine?”

Sophie shrugged.

“He drinks coffee.”

Laura covered her mouth.

Another sentence.

“Daddy squeezes too hard.”

“Does he?”

“No. Vanessa said say it clear.”

Dana remained calm.

“Did Vanessa ever hurt you while practicing?”

Sophie’s hand went to her ribs.

“She pinched me when I got it wrong.”

Ethan stepped away from the glass.

He wanted to break something.

Mara caught his arm.

“Don’t give them the picture they want.”

He breathed through his nose.

Slow.

Controlled.

That afternoon, Daniel was released on a temporary medical order after prosecutors agreed to review the original case.

He met Ethan at Mara’s office.

“I told you,” Daniel said.

Ethan hated the satisfaction in his voice, even though the man had earned some of it.

“What is Greybridge?”

Daniel’s expression changed.

“A business built around wealthy families being terrified of scandal.”

He explained what had happened to him.

First came counseling.

Then documentation.

Then experts.

Then legal filings.

Every ordinary disagreement became evidence.

Every apology became an admission.

Every private weakness became leverage.

“Vanessa didn’t invent it,” Daniel said. “She learned it.”

“From who?”

“Her mother.”

Judith Mercer.

Founder of Greybridge Family Solutions.

Daniel placed a cheap digital recorder on the table.

“I stole this from Vanessa before she caught me.”

The recording was rough.

Two women arguing.

Vanessa’s voice first.

“She’s four, Mom.”

Judith answered, cold and flat.

“So?”

“I’m not doing more.”

“You already did enough.”

“She cries when I walk into the room.”

“That makes the file believable.”

Ethan’s hands curled into fists.

Then Vanessa said something that changed the room.

“This was supposed to end after Claire.”

Silence.

Judith’s reply came softly.

“Claire was a mistake.”

Ethan stopped breathing.

Claire.

His dead wife.

Daniel looked at him.

“I thought you should hear that before someone convinced you this started with Sophie.”
