Chapter 1 - The Wedding Cake—The Father—The Faked Death

I wiped the vanilla frosting from my eyes and tasted my own blood.
The entire country club ballroom went dead silent. The string quartet stopped playing. Two hundred of Chicago’s wealthiest elites stared at me, their champagne glasses frozen in the air.
My mother-in-law, Eleanor, stood over the ruined five-tier wedding cake, wiping a smudge of icing from her designer dress. She didn’t look apologetic. She looked triumphant.
“Oops,” Eleanor said, her voice dripping with venom. “I suppose a cheap girl from the suburbs isn't used to walking in high heels.”
A loud, cruel bark of laughter echoed from the head table.
It was Marcus. My husband of exactly three hours. He was holding his ribs, laughing so hard his face was turning red.
I didn't cry. I didn't run to the bathroom.
I stood up, wiping the cake from my ruined silk dress, walked straight up to Eleanor, and slapped her across the face so hard the sound cracked like a gunshot.
Eleanor stumbled backward into a waiter, her eyes wide with absolute shock.
“You’re going to be homeless by midnight, Eleanor,” I whispered, my voice carrying through the silent ballroom. “Both of you.”
I turned on my heel and marched out of the reception hall. I didn't care about the gasps or the whispers. I headed straight for the private executive suites on the second floor.
I knew exactly what Marcus and Eleanor were hiding. I had found the encrypted USB drive hidden in Marcus's golf bag yesterday. It contained the digital ledgers for Eleanor’s shell companies—the accounts she was using to hide thirty million dollars in embezzled funds from a local union pension.
I locked the heavy oak door of the private study, booted up my laptop, and plugged the drive in.
I am a forensic accountant. It took me exactly four minutes to bypass the biometric lock and access the master terminal. I highlighted every single account under Eleanor's name and prepared to initiate a hard freeze that would lock her out forever.
“Step away from the keyboard, Julianne.”
The voice came from the dark corner of the study.
I froze. It wasn't Marcus. It wasn't one of Eleanor’s security guards.
A man stepped out of the shadows, holding a suppressed 9mm pistol aimed directly at my head. He was wearing a tailored suit, his hair slightly gray at the temples.
My breath caught in my throat. The room started to spin.
“Dad?” I choked out.
“Hello, Julianne,” my father said, his voice cold and devoid of any paternal warmth.
“You… you died,” I stammered, tears springing to my eyes. “I buried you six months ago. I paid for your funeral.”
“A closed casket is a wonderful tool,” my father smiled, cocking the hammer of the gun. “Now, take your hands off the computer. Eleanor’s money doesn't belong to her. It belongs to me. Because I’m the one who orchestrated the embezzlement.”
