Chapter 6 - The Trunk—The Husband—The Tire Iron

Marcus pressed the cold, rusted steel of the tire iron against my throat, pinning me to the wet brick.

“Did you really think you could outsmart me, Jules?” Marcus sneered, his breath smelling of stale whiskey. “My mother just called me. She told me you have the routing address. Give it to me.”

“You’re pathetic, Marcus,” I choked out, struggling for air. “You sold out your own mother to a dead man.”

“My mother cut me out of the family trust two years ago!” Marcus hissed, pressing the iron harder. “She was going to let me drown in debt while she lived on stolen union money. Thomas offered me a way out. I take the routing address from you, I give it to Thomas, and we split the thirty million.”

He reached into my pocket and ripped my phone out.

“Get in the trunk,” Marcus ordered, dragging me toward his parked Mercedes in the alley.

He shoved me brutally into the trunk and slammed the lid shut. Plunged into absolute darkness, I heard him lock the doors and start the engine.

I didn't panic. I remembered my father teaching me how to change a tire when I was sixteen. I felt around the dark trunk until my fingers brushed the emergency toolkit strapped to the side wall.

I pulled out a heavy metal lug wrench.

I felt for the emergency release latch, but Marcus had ripped the plastic handle off.

I waited until the car stopped at a red light. I gripped the lug wrench with both hands, aimed for the locking mechanism of the trunk, and swung with every ounce of strength I had left.

The metal groaned. I swung again.

The trunk popped open.

I threw myself out of the moving car, tumbling onto the wet asphalt as Marcus hit the gas. He didn't even notice I was gone.

I stood up, bruised and bleeding, on a desolate industrial street.

I patted my jacket. Marcus had taken my phone, but he didn't realize I had slipped his burner phone from his jacket pocket during the struggle.

I unlocked his burner. There was a single text message on the screen, sent by my father ten minutes ago.

Meet me at the Starlight Motel on Route 9. Bring the girl. Do not tell your mother.
