Chapter 20 - The Swiss Account—The Mother-in-Law—The Final Inheritance

I stared at the glowing screen of my phone, my breath catching in my throat.
Eleanor wasn't dead. She was sitting in a federal medical prison, recovering from a gunshot wound and awaiting a twenty-year sentence. Why was I receiving her Will?
I read the attached document.
It had been drafted and notarized three days ago from inside her prison cell.
“To my treacherous daughter-in-law, Julianne,” the opening line read. “You thought you were the smartest person in the room. You took my money, my son, and my freedom.”
I swallowed hard, reading faster.
“But I refuse to let the federal government seize the true Mercer family legacy. Marcus is a weak disappointment. Thomas is a thief. You, Julianne, are the only one ruthless enough to wield it.”
The document detailed the transfer of complete ownership of a massive, heavily fortified safety deposit box located in a private bank in Zurich, Switzerland.
“Inside the Zurich vault, you won't find money,” Eleanor’s letter continued. “You will find the Black Ledgers. The blackmail files my late husband compiled over thirty years. Files on senators, judges, and international cartel bosses. It is the key to ruling the Chicago underworld.”
My blood turned to ice. Eleanor hadn't just given me an inheritance. She had given me a target on my back.
“I have informed every mob boss in the city that you possess the keys to their destruction,” the letter concluded. “Enjoy the ten million, Julianne. You’re going to need it to pay for your funeral.”
I slowly lowered the phone.
Eleanor had weaponized her own empire against me from behind bars. She had painted a bullseye on my back that no amount of whistleblower immunity could protect me from.
I looked out at the dark, vast ocean. The peace I had felt ten minutes ago completely evaporated.
I opened my laptop again, transferring the ten million into immediate, liquid operational accounts.
I wasn't a forensic accountant anymore. I was a target.
I picked up my heavy canvas bag, pulled my hood over my head, and walked away from the pier, knowing exactly what I had to do next.
I had to hunt the hunters.
