Chapter 19 - The Whistleblower—The FBI—The Arrests

The Seattle police arrived in three minutes.

They found me sitting calmly in the booth, drinking my coffee, with the pistol resting on the table and Marcus groaning in a pool of blood on the floor.

I didn't need to explain much. I flashed my federal whistleblower immunity paperwork and the direct contact number for FBI Agent Vance in Chicago.

When the local cops ran Marcus’s name, they realized he had violated his federal probation by crossing state lines with a concealed firearm.

They dragged my former husband out of the coffee shop in handcuffs. He looked back at me through the rain-streaked window of the squad car, his eyes filled with absolute, broken defeat. He was going to federal prison for a very long time.

I gave my statement, paid for my coffee, and walked out into the crisp Seattle afternoon.

I walked down to the pier, overlooking the dark, churning waters of Puget Sound.

I pulled my secure laptop from my bag and opened it on a damp wooden bench.

I booted up the encrypted tor browser and logged into the decentralized wallet.

The screen loaded, displaying a balance of exactly ten million dollars in clean, untraceable cryptocurrency.

I had survived a corrupt husband, a homicidal mother-in-law, a vicious union mob boss, and the betrayal of my own parents. I had burned their empires to the ground and walked away without a scratch on my record.

I was finally, truly free.

I closed the laptop and smiled, letting the cold ocean breeze wash over me.

But as I stood up to leave, my phone buzzed in my pocket.

It was an email notification. The sender was marked RESTRICTED.

I opened the message.

It wasn't a threat. It was a scanned legal document.

It was a Last Will and Testament.

And the signature at the bottom belonged to Eleanor Mercer.
