Chapter 7 - The Local Motel—The Father—The Second Betrayal

The Starlight Motel was a rotting, neon-lit dump on the outskirts of the city.

I arrived an hour later, buying a cheap prepaid phone and a heavy flashlight from a 24-hour gas station on the way.

I crept around the back of the motel, rain soaking through my ruined wedding dress. Room 14 had its curtains drawn, but a sliver of light leaked through.

I pressed my ear against the cheap wooden door.

I expected to hear my father and Marcus arguing. But the voices inside weren't my father and my husband.

It was my father. And Eleanor.

“You have the routing numbers, Thomas?” Eleanor asked smoothly.

“Every single one,” my father replied. “And Frank Moretti’s men are on their way to Marcus’s condo right now. Marcus will take the fall for the stolen union funds. We split the thirty million and leave the country tonight.”

My stomach violently dropped.

My father hadn't partnered with Marcus. He had partnered with Eleanor. They had both conspired to frame Marcus and me, sacrificing their own children to save themselves from the union boss.

“What about Julianne?” Eleanor asked.

“Julianne is resourceful,” my father sighed. “But Detective Russo is tracking her phone’s GPS right now. He’ll put a bullet in her head and drop her in the river before dawn.”

They had used Marcus’s greed and my accounting skills to set the perfect trap.

I stepped back from the door, gripping the heavy flashlight. I wasn't just a pawn anymore. I was going to burn them both alive.

I walked around to the front of the motel office, broke the glass of the fire alarm pull station, and yanked the lever down.

The deafening shriek of the fire alarm pierced the night.

I ran back to the shadows as the door to Room 14 burst open. My father and Eleanor rushed out, panicked by the noise.

I didn't attack them. I slipped past them, right into their empty motel room, and locked the door behind me.

On the bed lay my father’s open briefcase. Inside wasn't just a laptop.

It was a stack of blackmail photos. And the person in the photos was my own mother.
