Chapter 11 - What Happened to Eleanor

Adrian did not react.
Helena watched for one.
“Nice try.”
He opened the authentication log.
Sofia’s user name.
But the biometric token was wrong.
Marcus had marked it in red.
Cloned credential.
Not Sofia.
Adrian smiled.
“You forged her account.”
Helena’s face hardened.
“No.”
“Someone did.”
“Does it matter?”
“Yes.”
Because Helena had just admitted she knew the route override existed.
Police sirens approached.
Helena stood.
“You brought them.”
“Of course.”
She grabbed Ernesto.
He bit her hand.
Hard.
Helena screamed.
Adrian lunged.
Door crashed open.
Marcus and officers flooded the room.
Mateo came behind them despite every instruction.
Ernesto ran into his arms.
Helena was pinned against the table.
She laughed while officers cuffed her.
“You think this ends here?”
Adrian said nothing.
She looked at Sofia, who had arrived downstairs with federal agents.
“Ask her why Eleanor chose her in the first place.”
Sofia went white.
Adrian saw it.
Not confusion.
Recognition.
“What haven’t you told me?”
Sofia stared at Ernesto.
Then Helena was dragged away.
Hours later, in a federal interview room, Adrian played Daniel’s recorder.
Helena’s voice.
William should have listened too.
Then Eleanor.
Then Project Meridian.
Enough for conspiracy.
Enough to reopen deaths.
Marcus laid out Wexler’s medical records.
Eleanor’s overdose had not been accidental.
A prescription had been changed the same day Helena approved payment.
One hidden audio file came from Eleanor herself.
Her voice sounded tired.
“If anything happens to me, Adrian gets everything.”
Helena answered:
“No. Adrian gets what I allow him to survive.”
Chair scraped.
Eleanor said:
“William should have told the truth.”
Helena replied:
“William should have listened too.”
Adrian stopped the recording.
His hands had gone numb.
Helena had not simply known.
She had participated.
Marcus opened the Black Ledger to a page Adrian had missed.
E. COLE - TERMINATION CONTINGENCY.
Below it:
W. COLE - PRIOR RESOLUTION.
Adrian stared.
Prior resolution.
His father.
Two deaths.
Same ledger.
Sofia sat across the room, silent.
Adrian turned to her.
“What did Helena mean?”
Sofia looked at him.
“Eleanor didn’t find me by accident.”
Adrian waited.
“She already knew who I was.”
“You were her daughter.”
“No.”
Sofia’s voice broke.
“She knew something else.”
“What?”
Sofia looked toward Mateo.
Then Ernesto.
May you like
“She knew Ernesto would matter before he was even born.”
CUT.
