Chapter 8 - The Black Ledger

Adrian shoved Daniel against the church wall.
“What did Helena pay for?”
Daniel did not fight back.
“I don’t know.”
“You expect me to believe that?”
“I know where the money went.”
“Where?”
“A private medical contractor.”
Adrian released him.
Marcus arrived from the dark.
“Name.”
Daniel gave it.
Wexler Clinical Services.
The company dissolved fourteen years earlier.
Eleanor died fifteen years ago.
Close enough to leave records.
Marcus called a forensic researcher.
Daniel looked at Adrian.
“Helena is preparing a board action.”
“What action?”
“To suspend you.”
“On what grounds?”
“Post-traumatic impairment. Reckless use of company security. Unauthorized access to foundation systems.”
Adrian laughed.
“She tried to kill me and now wants HR paperwork.”
“She wants legitimacy.”
“Why take the ledger?”
Daniel looked down.
“Because I helped her once.”
Adrian’s jaw tightened.
“The bridge.”
“Yes.”
“You disabled my GPS.”
“Yes.”
“You knew Ernesto was there?”
“No.”
“Did you know the recovery team intended to restrain me?”
“No.”
“Then what did you think you were doing?”
“Victor said they needed to scare you into resigning.”
“You believed him?”
“My son was in prison.”
Adrian remembered.
Fabricated evidence.
Twenty extra years threatened.
Daniel’s face collapsed.
“I was weak.”
“No. You chose.”
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.”
That answer mattered more than excuses.
Marcus’s phone buzzed.
Wexler records recovered.
One physician payment three days before Eleanor died.
Medication consultation.
Emergency home visit.
Authorized by Helena Cross.
Adrian’s fingers went cold.
The official report said Eleanor accidentally doubled her sedative dose.
Wexler’s private note said dosage adjustment requested by “family representative.”
No patient signature.
No Eleanor authorization.
Marcus looked up.
“This can reopen the death investigation.”
Daniel nodded.
“There’s more.”
He pulled out a small recorder.
“After the bridge, I started recording Helena.”
Adrian pressed play.
Eleanor’s name.
Victor’s name.
Then Helena’s voice:
William should have listened too.
Adrian stopped breathing.
Daniel said, “That was three nights ago.”
Adrian rewound.
Helena again:
Eleanor thought giving the girl away would keep her safe. Then she found her again and ruined everything.
Sofia.
Adrian played the next line.
Helena:
The boy should have ended the bloodline cleanly.
Adrian gripped the recorder.
Ernesto.
Marcus whispered, “We have motive.”
Daniel shook his head.
“Not enough.”
Adrian looked at him.
“What else?”
Daniel swallowed.
“She has someone inside child services.”
Adrian’s phone rang.
Sofia.
He answered.
Her voice came broken and fast.
“Adrian, they took Ernesto.”
He was already moving.
“Who?”
“A child-protection team. They had papers.”
Marcus grabbed the keys.
Adrian asked, “What agency?”
Sofia sobbed once.
“I called them.”
A pause.
May you like
“They said nobody came for him.”
CUT.
