Chapter 5 - What Eleanor Never Told Adrian

Adrian opened every file with Eleanor’s name.

Sofia sat across from him, pale and furious.

“No DNA assumptions.”

“Agreed.”

“No one tells Ernesto anything yet.”

“Agreed.”

Mateo stood behind her.

“We verify first.”

Marcus had already found the adoption archive.

A sealed Cook County file.

Female infant.

Birth date matched Sofia’s.

Adoptive parents: Teresa and Luis Reyes.

Biological mother: redacted.

One private note had survived digitization.

MATERNAL FAMILY REQUESTS PERMANENT CONFIDENTIALITY.

Sofia stared at the screen.

“My parents never told me.”

Mateo touched her shoulder.

“They may have promised not to.”

Adrian found an old photograph in Eleanor’s personal archive.

A twenty-one-year-old Sofia leaving a diner.

Eleanor sat behind the glass watching her.

Sofia remembered the day.

“She approached me outside.”

“What did she say?” Adrian asked.

“That she had a bookkeeping job.”

“Nothing else?”

Sofia closed her eyes.

“One thing.”

Mateo leaned closer.

“She looked at me for a long time and said, ‘You have my mother’s eyes.’”

Adrian’s breath slowed.

His grandmother’s portrait hung in every Cole home.

Same dark eyes.

Same shape.

Sofia had them.

Marcus arranged a private DNA comparison using Eleanor’s preserved medical sample.

They waited six hours.

Nobody spoke about the result while waiting.

Ernesto did homework at the other end of the room.

He asked Adrian how to spell “electricity.”

Adrian answered.

The normality hurt.

At 7:14 p.m., Marcus’s secure laptop chimed.

Sofia stood before he opened it.

“I want to see.”

Marcus turned the screen.

MATERNAL RELATIONSHIP CONSISTENT WITH PARENT-CHILD.

Probability above 99.99%.

Sofia sank into the chair.

Adrian did not touch her.

He did not know if he had the right.

She looked up first.

“So you’re my brother.”

“Half-brother.”

She laughed once through tears.

“Of course the billionaire is my brother.”

Adrian almost laughed too.

Mateo did not.

He was reading the trust.

“What happens if Adrian dies?”

Marcus answered.

“Sofia’s line becomes controlling beneficiary.”

“And if Sofia dies?”

Silence.

Marcus looked toward Ernesto.

“Ernesto.”

Mateo’s face went white.

Sofia whispered, “That’s why they needed both.”

Adrian’s phone buzzed.

A message from Helena.

DINNER TOMORROW. FAMILY ONLY.

Sofia looked at it.

“She knows.”

“Maybe.”

“No.”

She pointed at the last line Helena had added.

BRING YOUR SISTER IF SHE’S READY.

Adrian stopped breathing.

May you like

Nobody outside the room knew the DNA result.

CUT.
