Chapter 3 - The Crash Was Never Supposed to Look Random

Marcus slammed the penthouse recording onto the conference screen.

“Your father.”

Helena’s voice repeated through the secure room.

Adrian stood with both hands on the table.

Mateo paced behind him.

Sofia kept Ernesto in the next room with headphones and a movie he was not watching.

Marcus pulled up the crash reconstruction.

“Forget Helena’s last line for one minute.”

“I can’t.”

“You have to.”

He enlarged the traffic map.

Adrian’s town car.

The truck that forced it toward the bridge.

The black Cross Foundation sedan.

Then a fourth vehicle.

A white utility van parked two blocks away.

“What is that?” Adrian asked.

“Recovery team.”

“How do you know?”

Marcus displayed a contractor invoice recovered from Victor’s archive.

RECOVERY WINDOW: 11 MINUTES.

Adrian frowned.

“Recovery of what?”

“That’s the problem.”

Marcus marked the timeline.

The town car hit the barrier at 11:40.

The utility van was ordered to approach at 11:51.

“Eleven minutes,” Mateo said.

“Yes.”

Adrian looked at the river map.

“If they wanted me dead, why wait?”

Marcus met his eyes.

“They didn’t expect you to die immediately.”

The room tightened around that sentence.

Mateo leaned closer.

“Then what was the van supposed to recover?”

Marcus opened another invoice.

Two thermal blankets.

Portable oxygen.

Restraints.

A mobile document scanner.

Adrian stared.

“Documents?”

“Or signatures.”

He remembered Victor’s contingency file from Part 1.

Severe accident.

Cognitive impairment.

Board removal.

A living Adrian was more useful for several minutes than a dead one.

Sofia entered quietly.

“I found something on Ernesto’s phone.”

She held out a screenshot.

The fake message telling him to wait beneath the bridge had arrived at 10:58.

Forty-two minutes before Adrian left the main road.

“They synchronized them,” she said.

Adrian looked at her.

“Who had access to your number?”

“Too many people.”

Marcus checked routing.

The spoof had passed through an emergency relay system.

EC-SAFE.

Sofia’s face drained.

“No.”

Adrian turned.

“What?”

She sat slowly.

“That was Eleanor’s system.”

“My mother?”

Sofia nodded.

“She taught me that code years ago.”

Mateo stopped pacing.

“When?”

“Before Ernesto was born.”

Adrian stared at her.

“You knew my mother before Ernesto existed?”

Sofia looked at Mateo.

He looked just as shocked.

“Yes.”

“How?”

“She found me.”

“Why?”

Sofia’s hands began shaking.

“She said I could help her keep evidence outside Cole Meridian.”

Adrian sat.

“What evidence?”

“Victor. William. Helena.”

His father’s name hit like a fist.

Sofia continued.

“She never told me everything.”

“Did she tell you who you were?”

Sofia frowned.

“What does that mean?”

Marcus turned the screen.

The emergency relay profile had one owner designation.

EC FAMILY PROTOCOL.

Secondary protected user:

SOFIA R.

Relationship field:

DAUGHTER.

Nobody moved.

Adrian looked at Sofia.

May you like

She whispered, “That’s impossible.”

CUT.
