Chapter 4 - Ernesto Wasn't Bait

Sofia backed away from the screen.

“No.”

Mateo reached for her.

She moved past him.

“My mother was Teresa Reyes.”

Adrian kept his voice low.

“Maybe she raised you.”

“She was my mother.”

“I’m not saying she wasn’t.”

Sofia looked at the relationship field again.

DAUGHTER.

Marcus opened the full EC-SAFE registration.

Most of it had been scrubbed.

One surviving entry showed Eleanor Cole as primary owner.

Sofia as protected dependent.

Adrian as protected dependent.

Two names under one family protocol.

Mateo whispered, “Half-siblings.”

Sofia shook her head.

“Stop.”

Ernesto appeared in the doorway.

“What’s wrong?”

Everyone went quiet.

Sofia wiped her face.

“Nothing, baby.”

He stared at her.

“You only call me baby when something’s bad.”

Adrian almost smiled.

Almost.

Marcus crouched beside him.

“Do you remember anything else about the message?”

Ernesto looked at Sofia.

She nodded.

“It had a symbol.”

“What symbol?”

“A little green circle.”

Sofia sat down hard.

“That was Eleanor’s emergency mark.”

Adrian stared.

“So Helena didn’t just spoof Sofia.”

“She used my mother’s trust protocol.”

Sofia looked sick.

“She knew I would believe it was legitimate.”

Ernesto rubbed his arms.

“I did.”

Adrian’s chest tightened.

The boy had walked under that bridge because someone weaponized a dead woman’s safety system.

Marcus pulled another file.

Insurance memo.

SUBJECT A: A. COLE.

SUBJECT B: MINOR.

No name.

Mateo gripped the edge of the table.

“Minor.”

Adrian looked toward Ernesto.

Sofia did too.

The memo carried Helena’s authorization code.

Not Victor’s.

A second page defined projected outcomes.

A: TEMPORARY SURVIVAL ACCEPTABLE.

B: NO SURVIVAL.

Sofia covered her mouth.

Mateo lunged at the screen like Helena might be behind it.

“She marked my son for death.”

Adrian grabbed his arm.

“We need proof that survives court.”

“I need five minutes with her.”

“You get five minutes and she becomes the victim.”

Mateo stared at him.

Then slowly stepped back.

Marcus looked at the map again.

“Ernesto wasn’t bait.”

Adrian nodded.

“No.”

Mateo’s voice cracked.

“He was the second target.”

Sofia held Ernesto so tightly he protested.

“Mom.”

She loosened her arms.

Adrian turned back to the insurance memo.

Why kill a homeless nine-year-old?

Not because he witnessed the crash.

The order existed before the crash.

Before Ernesto saw anything.

Marcus opened Eleanor’s trust file.

A buried succession clause appeared.

IF PRIMARY HEIR DIES WITHOUT ISSUE, VOTING BLOCK PASSES TO OTHER LIVING ISSUE OF ELEANOR COLE.

Adrian read the line twice.

“Other living issue.”

Sofia stared.

Marcus clicked into dependent descendants.

One name loaded.

ERNESTO REYES.

Mateo whispered, “No.”

Marcus looked at Adrian.

“If Sofia is Eleanor’s daughter, Ernesto inherits through her.”

Adrian looked at the boy.

The bridge had not brought two strangers together.

It had brought two heirs together.

Mateo’s face twisted.

“Ernesto wasn’t there to save you.”

Adrian said nothing.

Mateo looked at his sleeping son through the glass door.

May you like

“He was supposed to die with you.”

CUT.
