Chapter 3 - What the Camera Saw

The recording from the grand hall arrived that afternoon.

Adrian expected Detective Ortiz to call him immediately.

She didn't.

Instead, she asked him to remain available while investigators verified the source file and interviewed the mansion's security manager.

For six hours, Adrian waited.

At three seventeen, his attorney, Rebecca Hall, called.

“Adrian, I spoke to the detective. The footage supports Maria's account.”

He closed his eyes.

“Tell me exactly what it shows.”

“Vanessa holding Oliver beyond the railing. Maria standing below. Vanessa releasing him. Maria catching him.”

Adrian sank into the nearest chair.

There was no misunderstanding.

No fall.

No accident.

Vanessa had deliberately let his son drop twelve feet.

“Where is she?”

“The police are locating her.”

Adrian stood.

“I'm going to find her.”

“Absolutely not.”

“She could've killed my son.”

“And you confronting her won't make him safer. Let the investigators do their jobs.”

Adrian gripped the phone until his knuckles whitened.

Rebecca waited.

Finally, he sat down again.

“Okay.”

An hour later, Detective Ortiz arrived at the hospital.

She showed him a still image from the footage.

Vanessa stood at the railing.

Oliver hung beneath her arms.

Maria was visible below, reaching upward.

Adrian stared at the image.

Vanessa's face was frighteningly ordinary.

She looked like someone moving a piece of furniture.

He pushed the photograph away.

“I don't want to see any more.”

Ortiz placed it inside her folder.

“There's something else.”

She explained that, after the officers arrived, Vanessa had contacted the mansion's security administrator, Owen Pike.

She had asked him to disable remote access to the east-hall camera system and remove what she called a corrupted recording.

Owen had refused.

He preserved the message and notified investigators.

“Vanessa knew about the camera?” Adrian asked.

“She apparently knew it existed. Whether she remembered its view of the balcony when she acted is another question.”

Adrian remembered how quickly Vanessa had turned toward the hallway.

“She was trying to erase it.”

“That's something the evidence may establish.”

Ortiz closed her folder.

“Mr. Cole, I also need to ask about your wife's death.”

Adrian looked up.

“Why?”

“Because of the threat on the drive.”

“Claire crashed her car. The police investigated.”

“I know.”

“She was alone.”

“The original report says no other vehicle was identified.”

Adrian frowned.

“What's the difference?”

Ortiz studied him.

“That's why we're reviewing the case.”

That evening, Vanessa was arrested at a private guesthouse outside the city.

She retained a criminal defense attorney and declined to answer questions.

When Adrian learned she was in custody, he expected relief.

Instead, he remembered the way Vanessa used to lift Oliver from his crib.

The kisses she pressed against his forehead.

The bedtime stories she offered to read.

He wondered how many times he had left them alone together.

Back at the hospital, a nurse allowed him to hold Oliver under supervision.

The little boy opened his eyes and caught his father's thumb.

Adrian lowered his face into his son's hair.

“I won't leave you with her again.”

Rebecca called just before midnight.

“There's going to be a bail hearing. And Vanessa's attorney is already preparing a defense.”

“What defense?”

“He's suggesting that the footage doesn't show what led up to the incident.”

Adrian looked at his sleeping son.

“What could possibly justify throwing a baby?”

“Nothing. But they're going to attack Maria's credibility.”

Adrian's expression changed.

Maria had risked her life to save Oliver.

Now Vanessa intended to destroy hers.

“Then Maria needs a lawyer too,” he said.

Rebecca paused.

“One who represents her interests, not yours.”

Adrian looked through the glass toward the hallway where Maria sat, holding an ice pack against her injured shoulder.

“Find someone independent. I'll offer to cover the cost without controlling what she says.”

Then he added something he'd never expected to say about the woman he planned to marry.

“And tell Detective Ortiz I want every access Vanessa ever had to my family reviewed.”
