Chapter 15 - The Woman Who Caught Him

Nearly a year after Oliver's fall, Maria entered a courtroom and saw Vanessa Sterling for the first time since that terrible afternoon.

Vanessa wore a dark jacket.

Her hair was neatly arranged.

She looked smaller without the mansion, the designer clothes, and the employees who once rushed to obey her.

But when their eyes met, Maria felt the same cold fear.

Daniel leaned toward her.

“You don't have to look at her.”

Maria shook her head.

“I know.”

She took her seat.

The prosecution presented the evidence in stages.

The security recording.

The testimony of the responding officers.

The paramedics' observations.

The medical evidence.

The messages Vanessa sent to the security administrator after the fall.

An expert explained how the camera footage had been preserved and authenticated.

Then Maria was called.

She walked to the witness stand.

Her left shoulder still became painful after prolonged lifting.

The scar near her temple had faded.

But she remembered every second of the fall.

The prosecutor asked how long she'd worked for the Cole family.

“Seven years.”

“Did you care for Oliver?”

“Yes.”

“Were you responsible for him on the day of the incident?”

“I was working in the house. Vanessa took him from the nursery.”

“Did you give her permission to take him onto the balcony?”

“No.”

Maria described following Vanessa into the foyer.

Begging her to return Oliver.

Reaching toward the child as he cried.

“Then what happened?”

“Vanessa let go.”

“Did she slip?”

“No.”

“Did someone push her?”

“No.”

“How do you know she released him deliberately?”

Maria looked at the prosecutor.

“Because I was looking directly at her hands.”

The courtroom was quiet.

“I saw her open them.”

The prosecutor let the answer stand.

During cross-examination, Vanessa's attorney questioned Maria's attachment to Oliver.

“Didn't you once refer to him as your little boy?”

Maria nodded.

“Yes.”

“Would you agree that suggests a rather personal attachment?”

“It suggests I loved taking care of him.”

“Were you upset when Ms. Sterling began spending more time with Oliver?”

“I was worried about how she treated him.”

“Because you wanted him to yourself?”

“No. Because she'd started using him to frighten me.”

The attorney asked whether Maria had withheld important evidence about Claire's death.

“Yes,” she answered.

“For months?”

“Yes.”

“So you admit you concealed information from Mr. Cole?”

Maria's throat tightened.

“I kept a promise to Claire because I was afraid. I should've come forward sooner.”

“And we're supposed to believe you now?”

Maria looked toward the jury.

“You don't have to believe me because I say I'm telling the truth.”

She paused.

“You can watch what happened.”

The attorney had no immediate follow-up.

Later, Adrian testified.

He described arriving at the mansion.

Seeing Maria injured.

Hearing Vanessa accuse her.

Calling the ambulance.

Then he was shown the security footage.

He had avoided watching the entire recording until the prosecution prepared him for trial.

Now he sat still as the screen showed his son falling.

Maria caught Oliver.

Her body struck the marble.

Vanessa remained above them.

Adrian's eyes filled.

When the prosecutor asked what Maria had done, he answered quietly.

“She saved my son.”

He looked toward Maria.

“She saved him when I wasn't there.”

The defense suggested Adrian's grief over Claire had influenced his interpretation of Vanessa's actions.

Adrian considered the question.

“My grief made me trust Vanessa when I shouldn't have.”

He turned toward the jury.

“But it didn't change what the camera recorded.”
