Chapter 11 - The Driver's Secret

Graham Voss had worked for the Cole family for eleven years.

He knew the estate's roads, employee schedules, and vehicle procedures.

He had driven Adrian to airports.

Collected Claire from charity events.

Transported Oliver to pediatric appointments.

He was the kind of employee people stopped noticing because he was always there.

That had made him useful.

When investigators returned with further questions, Graham initially repeated his story about the wrong turn.

Then Ortiz showed him the scheduling records, transportation data, and Claire's note about Vanessa requesting access to her car.

Graham stared at the note.

“She wrote that?”

“Yes.”

He looked toward his attorney.

“I want to talk privately.”

The interview paused.

When it resumed, his attorney explained that Graham was prepared to discuss his activities that night, subject to appropriate legal protections.

Ortiz made no promises about immunity.

Graham began with the money.

Vanessa had paid him for errands that weren't recorded on company schedules.

At first, they were ordinary favors.

Delivering packages.

Picking up personal documents.

Driving to meetings she didn't want listed on her calendar.

Then the requests changed.

She wanted him to find out where Claire went.

Who she met.

Whether she carried documents with her.

“Why did you agree?” Ortiz asked.

Graham stared at his hands.

“I needed the money.”

“For what?”

“My brother had debts. I was trying to help him.”

“Did Vanessa threaten you?”

“Later. She said I was already involved.”

Ortiz waited.

Graham explained that on the night Claire died, Vanessa ordered him to follow her.

Claire was carrying records that Vanessa wanted returned.

Graham had been instructed to stop Claire before she reached an accountant.

“I called her,” he said.

“You called Claire?”

“Yes. Vanessa gave me her number.”

“What did you say?”

“I told her she needed to pull over.”

Ortiz remembered Maria's statement.

“What happened next?”

“She wouldn't stop.”

Graham's voice became strained.

“It was raining. I kept following her. Vanessa was calling me, asking whether I'd gotten the documents.”

“Then?”

Graham closed his eyes.

“I tried to get her attention. I wanted her to stop the car.”

Ortiz didn't interrupt.

“She swerved. There was contact between the vehicles. She lost control.”

The room was quiet.

“You struck her car?”

Graham nodded.

“Did you call emergency services?”

“No.”

“Did you stop to help?”

Tears ran down his face.

“I panicked.”

Ortiz studied him.

“What did Vanessa say when you called afterward?”

Graham covered his eyes.

“She told me to come back and keep my mouth shut.”

His confession would require corroboration.

His account could contain omissions or attempts to shift blame.

But investigators now had a specific explanation to test against the crash evidence, records, and communications.

Graham's attorney advised him to surrender his devices and identify any preserved messages.

He agreed.

That afternoon, Adrian learned that Graham had admitted involvement in the crash.

Rebecca gave him the information carefully.

“It's not a final legal finding. The investigation is continuing.”

Adrian barely heard her.

“Claire called Maria because a man was following her?”

“That appears consistent with what Graham is saying.”

Adrian turned toward the window.

His wife had been frightened.

She had tried to reach someone.

And the man chasing her had worked for his family.

“Did Vanessa know?” Adrian asked.

“Investigators are examining her role.”

Adrian closed his eyes.

He remembered Vanessa standing beside Claire's coffin.

Her hand on his shoulder.

Her voice whispering that he had to be strong for Oliver.

He had thanked her.

He had leaned on her.

May you like

He had believed her.

And now he knew the road where Claire died had held far more than an unfortunate accident.
