Chapter 14 - The Words Vanessa Sent

The evidence against Graham Voss grew stronger over the following months.

Investigators recovered messages from his devices and compared them with records obtained through lawful requests to service providers.

Several communications supported his account.

Vanessa had instructed him to follow Claire.

She had demanded updates.

She had repeatedly asked whether he had recovered the documents.

After the crash, Graham sent a message saying something had gone terribly wrong.

Vanessa's response was brief.

Don't come back here. I'll contact you.

The messages didn't prove she intended Claire to die.

They did establish that Graham's actions had not been an independent errand.

The financial investigation also continued.

The combined records connected Summit Bridge Advisory to accounts that benefited Vanessa and an associate.

Not all the missing money was recoverable.

Some had paid debts.

Some had financed expensive purchases.

Other funds had passed through additional accounts still being examined.

Vanessa had built a public identity around being indispensable.

She managed the charity.

Organized the estate's major events.

Comforted Adrian after Claire died.

Handled appointments when grief made him incapable of remembering ordinary obligations.

She liked telling people that without her, the Cole family would fall apart.

Now the institution she'd used to establish that importance was examining every decision she'd made.

Her attorney requested a meeting with the prosecutors to discuss potential resolutions to the financial charges.

He maintained that Vanessa denied intending to harm either Claire or Oliver.

Meanwhile, a letter arrived at Rebecca Hall's office.

It was addressed to Adrian.

Vanessa had written it from custody.

Rebecca asked whether he wanted to read it.

He did.

The first page described how lonely Adrian had been after Claire's death.

How Vanessa had helped him eat, sleep, and manage the household.

How she'd believed they could build a new family together.

Then came the sentence that made Adrian put the letter down.

You know I love Oliver. I only lost control because Maria was threatening everything we had.

Adrian stared at the words.

Everything we had.

A future built on stolen money.

A dead wife.

A grieving husband who didn't know the truth.

And a baby Vanessa had thrown from a balcony.

Rebecca watched him.

“Are you going to respond?”

Adrian folded the letter.

“No.”

“Do you want me to preserve it?”

“Yes. Give it to the appropriate investigators if it's relevant.”

He looked toward the nursery.

“She's still blaming Maria.”

Rebecca nodded.

“People don't always become honest when their lies stop working.”

Adrian placed the letter on her desk.

He had once believed Vanessa's certainty was strength.

Now he recognized something different.

She had built her life around the conviction that other people could be managed.

Claire's questions could be dismissed.

Maria's reputation could be destroyed.

Adrian's grief could be directed.

Even Oliver's life could be treated as leverage.

But the legal system was no longer asking Vanessa to explain herself to someone who loved her.

It was demanding evidence.

As summer approached, the prosecutor announced that Vanessa would face trial for the attack on Oliver.

Related financial charges remained under investigation.

Graham's case concerning Claire's crash proceeded separately.

And for the first time since his wife's death, Adrian understood that finding the truth would not bring Claire home.

It would only determine what the living chose to do with it.
