Chapter 2 - The Woman in the Recording

Adrian reached for the USB drive.
Maria drew her hand back.
“Wait.”
He stared at her.
“Maria, that's my wife's voice.”
“I know. But after what happened to Oliver, I don't want anyone claiming I changed what's on it.”
Adrian looked at the small silver object between them.
Five months ago, Claire had died on a rain-soaked mountain road.
The police called it a single-vehicle accident.
Vanessa had helped arrange the funeral, comforted him afterward, and told him repeatedly that Claire would have wanted him to move forward.
Now Maria was telling him that the same woman had threatened his wife.
Detective Lena Ortiz arrived at the hospital shortly before midnight.
She was in her forties, with tired eyes and a manner that made Adrian understand she wasn't interested in his money.
Maria handed her the drive.
“Claire gave it to me. I listened to part of one recording after she died, but I haven't changed anything.”
Ortiz placed it in an evidence envelope.
“Who else knew you had this?”
“Vanessa.”
“Anyone else?”
“No.”
“And why did you keep it for five months?”
Maria looked at Adrian.
“Because Claire asked me to.”
Ortiz wrote something down.
“That's not the same as saying it was the right decision.”
“I know.”
The answer was so quiet that Adrian almost missed it.
Ortiz arranged for the drive to be preserved and examined.
She also requested the family's original security recordings, the names of everyone who could access them, and Maria's complete account of the balcony incident.
At one in the morning, Adrian went into Oliver's hospital room.
His son lay in a crib surrounded by monitors.
The blue sock had been removed and placed with his belongings.
Adrian touched Oliver's small hand.
Five months earlier, Claire had held that same hand against her cheek and laughed because Oliver refused to let go of her hair.
“I should've protected you,” Adrian whispered.
Oliver slept through his father's apology.
By morning, a technician had created a forensic working copy of the USB drive.
Ortiz invited Adrian to hear the relevant recording at the station after confirming he was willing to provide a statement about anything he recognized.
Maria accompanied him.
The audio began with the sound of dishes being moved.
Then Claire spoke.
“Vanessa, I saw the transfers.”
Adrian's breath caught.
Claire.
He hadn't heard her voice since the funeral.
Vanessa answered.
“You went through accounts you didn't understand.”
“Those payments were supposed to build emergency housing. I went to the property. There's nothing there.”
“Lower your voice.”
“Where did the money go?”
A chair scraped.
Then Vanessa spoke again, her voice cold.
“Think carefully before you accuse me of stealing, Claire.”
“I'm not accusing you. I'm asking you to explain.”
“Adrian trusts me.”
“He's my husband.”
“And lately, he hasn't even trusted you to remember your own appointments.”
A long silence followed.
Adrian remembered Vanessa expressing concern about Claire's exhaustion after childbirth.
He remembered agreeing that Claire had seemed distracted.
He remembered how angry Claire became whenever Vanessa offered to help.
On the recording, Claire's voice hardened.
“You've been telling him I'm unstable.”
“I'm telling him what everyone can see.”
“You're lying.”
“Then prove it.”
Another silence.
Then Vanessa said something that made Adrian feel physically sick.
“You have a beautiful little boy, Claire. Don't make me the woman who has to explain to him someday why his mother ruined everything.”
Claire whispered, “Are you threatening my son?”
“I'm telling you to stop.”
The recording ended.
No one spoke.
Finally, Detective Ortiz closed the laptop.
“Mr. Cole, do you recognize both voices?”
Adrian nodded.
“My wife. And Vanessa.”
Ortiz watched him carefully.
“Is there anything in that conversation you already knew about?”
Adrian wanted to say no.
Instead, he remembered an evening when Claire had stood in the kitchen holding a stack of foundation invoices.
She had asked him to look at them.
He had been late for a board meeting.
Vanessa had called twice.
And Adrian had told his wife they could talk about it later.
They never had.
“Yes,” he said.
His voice sounded unfamiliar.
“There was something Claire tried to tell me.”
Maria looked at him.
“What did she say?”
Adrian closed his eyes.
“She said someone was stealing from the foundation.”

He opened them.
“And I told her she needed to get some rest.”
