Chapter 11 - Daniel's Last Message

Victoria opened Daniel’s warning.
No video.
Only text.
CHARLES,
IF YOU CONTACT LILY, APPROACH VICTORIA, OR TOUCH THE HARBOR HOUSE PROPERTY, THE PERMIT TRIGGER RELEASES EVERYTHING.
YOU WILL NOT KNOW WHEN.
D.
Victoria stared.
“He knew Charles would test the boundary.”
Arthur nodded.
“He built deterrence.”
“Then died.”
“Yes.”
“And Charles waited.”
“Until Harbor House.”
Victoria looked at the date Charles began buying nearby parcels.
Before Daniel died.
The plan had already started.
The clinic gave him opportunity.
The permit gave Daniel’s archive its trigger.
Arthur said, “Federal environmental prosecutor received the third release.”
“When?”
“This morning.”
“Then Charles is finished.”
Arthur’s silence worried her.
“What?”
“The prosecutor never received it.”
Victoria’s chest tightened.
“Why?”
“Email delivered.”
“So?”
“Recipient account was deactivated two years ago.”
Daniel had planned carefully.
Time still beat him.
Victoria closed her eyes.
“Can we recover it?”
“Probably.”
“Do it.”
Another call.
Bell.
“Victoria.”
“What now?”
“Court accepted temporary site shutdown.”
“Expected.”
“There’s another filing.”
She waited.
“Professional conduct complaint against you.”
“From?”
“Anonymous.”
She laughed.
“Charles.”
“Probably.”
“Grounds?”
“Using privileged contamination information to influence land acquisition.”
That accusation could threaten her license.
Charles was burying her under process.
Not bullets.
Paper.
Exactly how men like him killed reputations.
Bell continued.
“They attached billing records.”
Victoria frowned.
Her firm.
Melissa.
Fabricated.
“Send everything.”
She reviewed.
One entry jumped.
Date:
Daniel’s final hospitalization.
Client:
Baird Environmental Trust.
Attorney:
Victoria Harrington.
She had never represented them.
But the time entry was real.
That afternoon, she had billed six hours to another matter.
Someone copied the template.
She called Melissa.
“Who had billing admin access?”
“Three people.”
“Names.”
Melissa gave them.
One:
Martin Lowe.
Her senior partner.
Victoria’s stomach dropped.
He had recruited her.
Promoted her.
Defended her after Daniel died.
He had keys to everything.
She called him.
No answer.
Then office security called.
“Ms. Harrington?”
“Yes.”
“Mr. Lowe just entered records storage.”
Victoria stood.
“Stop him.”
“He has managing-partner access.”
“Stop him anyway.”
A crash sounded through the phone.
Alarm.
Then silence.
Victoria ran.
