Chapter 6 - The Thirteenth Drum

Victoria ended the call.
Melissa stared.
“Who?”
“Charles.”
“What did he say?”
Victoria grabbed Daniel’s archive.
“He thinks I inherited something.”
She searched every trust reference.
Nothing obvious.
Arthur arrived twenty minutes later.
He had Evelyn with him.
Evelyn looked exhausted.
No black velvet.
No armor.
Just an old woman in a gray coat.
Victoria’s jaw tightened.
“Why is she here?”
Arthur said, “Because she knows the old Vance agreements.”
Evelyn met Victoria’s eyes.
“I came because Charles lied to me too.”
Victoria almost laughed.
“You humiliated my six-year-old.”
“I know.”
“Do not ask me to care about your revelation.”
“I’m not.”
Evelyn put a leather folder on the desk.
“Daniel gave me this before he died.”
Victoria stared.
“You met him?”
“Twice.”
“You never told me.”
“No.”
“Everybody loved that choice.”
Evelyn opened the folder.
Original Vance indemnification agreement.
Environmental cleanup trust.
Succession clauses.
Victoria scanned the signatures.
Then stopped.
Trustee succession:
Upon death or incapacity of Daniel Harrington, successor trustee passes to lawful spouse.
Her.
Victoria.
Arthur whispered, “That’s what Charles meant.”
Evelyn nodded.
“Charles cannot trigger the reversion provision without trustee authorization.”
“So he needed me.”
“Removed.”
“Discredited.”
“Or frightened.”
Victoria looked toward the ballroom security footage on another screen.
The slap.
Her worst thirty seconds.
Charles could use it.
Evelyn said quietly, “He told me Harbor House would bankrupt Claudia’s generation.”
“You believed him.”
“Yes.”
“You bribed zoning officials.”
“I paid consultants.”
Arthur snapped, “Who paid the officials?”
Evelyn shook her head.
“I never authorized bribes.”
“Then Charles did.”
She looked at Victoria.
“He used my name.”
That sounded familiar.
Victoria said, “Why Lily?”
Evelyn’s eyes dropped.
“Charles said children make mothers predictable.”
Victoria’s hands curled.
“Daniel knew he threatened her.”
“Yes.”
“What deal did Daniel make?”
Evelyn gave her the letter.
Daniel’s handwriting.
CHARLES - I STOP. YOU STAY AWAY FROM VIC AND LILY.
Beneath it:
NO DIRECT OR INDIRECT CONTACT WITH LILY.
Victoria closed her eyes.
He had bargained with Charles.
Then Charles had filed that school request.
Broken the deal.
Daniel had known.
Arthur whispered, “That is why he built the release.”
Victoria opened another file.
Permit trigger.
Automated sender.
Daniel’s account.
The anonymous packet Arthur received was not anonymous.
It was Daniel.
Three years after his death.
Arthur sat.
For the first time, he looked old.
Victoria said, “You knew enough to help him set it up.”
“Yes.”
“Why not tell me?”
“He asked me not to.”
“Again.”
“I thought he was protecting you.”
“He was.”
She looked at Lily’s photograph.
“And all of you helped him lie.”
Arthur looked away.
Evelyn said, “Charles is going to use the gala.”
Victoria turned.
“What?”
“He called me after police took my statement.”
“What did he say?”
“That you gave him exactly what he needed.”
Her stomach dropped.
Her phone vibrated.
Court notification.
Emergency guardianship petition.
Petitioner:
CHARLES BAIRD.
Temporary guardian requested for:
LILY HARRINGTON.
Grounds:
VIOLENT CONDUCT BY SURVIVING PARENT.
Exhibit A:
Video still of Victoria slapping Evelyn.
Victoria stopped breathing.
