Chapter 8 - Why Evelyn Hated Harbor House

Charles’s SUV sat empty beside Warehouse Three.

The rear gate was open.

Police spread out.

Victoria entered with an officer and Arthur.

Evelyn stayed outside.

For once, she did not argue.

Below the broken slab, workers had exposed an old corridor.

Daniel’s map showed no corridor.

Charles knew it existed.

Of course.

Flashlights swept concrete walls.

A door at the end.

Stamped:

17-B.

The number from the retired engineer.

Victoria’s pulse climbed.

The door stood open.

Inside:

Shelves stripped bare.

Fresh scrape marks.

Someone had removed boxes.

A single file lay on the floor.

Charles Baird - Property Assemblage.

Arthur picked it up.

Maps.

Parcels around Harbor House.

Purchase dates stretching back twelve years.

Charles had been planning redevelopment before Harbor House existed.

Victoria said, “He did not react to the clinic.”

Arthur nodded.

“He waited for it.”

The clinic was the trigger.

Contamination failure.

Land reversion.

Cheap acquisition.

One long plan.

A sound came from farther inside.

Metal.

Victoria moved.

Officer stopped her.

“Behind me.”

They entered a second chamber.

Charles stood near a furnace.

Papers burning.

He turned.

No panic.

Just annoyance.

Victoria laughed.

“You always arrive when you’re supposed to.”

Charles dropped another file into the flames.

Police shouted.

He raised both hands.

“Nothing illegal about destroying my own records.”

Victoria pointed at the fire.

“You forged my authorization.”

“Prove it.”

“Melissa already confessed.”

Something changed.

Small.

Real.

Then gone.

Arthur stepped forward.

“Why Daniel?”

Charles’s mouth tightened.

“My family is not your concern.”

“Daniel was my husband.”

Charles looked at Victoria.

“He was my blood before he was yours.”

The sentence hit.

Victoria did not let it show.

“You watched Lily.”

“To understand risk.”

“She was three.”

“She was Daniel’s heir.”

Victoria frowned.

“Daniel had no meaningful estate.”

Charles smiled.

“Not money.”

“What?”

He looked toward the floor.

“Trust authority.”

Victoria’s chest tightened.

The environmental trust.

But Daniel’s authority had transferred to Victoria.

Charles said:

“Daniel’s death put the wrong trustee in the chair.”

“You mean me.”

“Yes.”

“You needed me removed.”

“Or cooperative.”

“You threatened my daughter.”

“I never touched Lily.”

“You watched her.”

Charles’s eyes stayed flat.

“I watched Daniel.”

Police cuffed him.

He did not resist.

As they led him past Victoria, he said:

“Ask Arthur why his signature is on the original settlement.”

Arthur froze.

Victoria turned.

“What?”

Charles smiled.

“There it is.”

Then police took him upstairs.

Victoria stared at Arthur.

He looked pale.

Too pale.

She whispered:

“What original settlement?”

Arthur said nothing.
