Chapter 14 - The Inheritance Nobody Knew Existed

Victoria did not speak.
Arthur sat behind his desk.
“I inherited the claim rights from one of the original families.”
“What families?”
“The Lowell group. Mill workers.”
“You were related.”
“Yes.”
“Then you represented your own family’s claims?”
“Not directly.”
“That sounds like a lawyer answer.”
“It is.”
“Try again.”
Arthur rubbed his forehead.
“My mother was one of the residents exposed.”
Victoria’s anger paused.
Not vanished.
Paused.
“She got sick?”
“Yes.”
“Did she settle?”
“Yes.”
“Did you?”
“I helped.”
“And then?”
“I found out years later the cleanup was incomplete.”
“Why not reopen?”
“Statute problems. Sealed agreements. Political pressure.”
“Cowardice.”
He looked at her.
“Yes.”
The same word Evelyn could have used.
This whole story ran on fear.
Arthur opened a safe.
Original Vance file.
The one Daniel referenced.
Inside:
Medical reports.
Photos.
Internal memos.
Cleanup fraud.
Charles’s correspondence.
Enough to end him.
Arthur had kept it.
For decades.
Victoria’s hands shook.
“You had this.”
“Yes.”
“Daniel knew.”
“Yes.”
“Why did you not release it after he died?”
“I thought Charles had stopped.”
Victoria laughed.
“Men keep mistaking quiet for stopped.”
Arthur accepted that.
Then her phone buzzed.
Court alert.
Charles’s guardianship petition dismissed permanently.
Professional complaint stayed.
Environmental reversion frozen.
For once, something moved in her favor.
Arthur said, “With this file and Daniel’s archive, Harbor House can survive.”
“Not on poisoned ground.”
“No.”
“We remediate.”
“Yes.”
“Correctly.”
“Yes.”
Victoria looked at the original file.
Then another document.
Trust amendment.
Daniel’s.
If Victoria removed, Arthur successor.
If Arthur refuses, successor passes to—
She read.
LILY HARRINGTON, through guardian.
Victoria stared.
Arthur whispered, “Daniel built redundancies.”
She shook her head.
“He built a maze.”
Then one final clause.
If fraud by Baird interests established, all successor trustees gain authority to recover diverted assets.
Victoria’s stomach tightened.
Charles had known.
That was why he targeted her.
That was why he targeted Arthur.
That was why he researched Lily.
Every branch led around him.
A dead man had built a cage.
Police called.
Charles’s office search found offshore transfers.
Bribery payments.
Forged legal authorizations.
More arrests coming.
Arthur exhaled.
“Maybe this is the end.”
Victoria looked at him.
“No.”
He frowned.
“Why?”
She held up Daniel’s final delayed message queue.
One message remained unopened.
Timestamp trigger:
CHARLES IN CUSTODY.
It had activated five minutes ago.
Recipient:
VICTORIA.
Subject:
ARTHUR.
Arthur stopped breathing.
Victoria pressed play.
May you like
