Chapter 15 - The Room That Finally Moved

Daniel appeared on-screen.
His face was thinner than in the other recordings.
This was later.
Near the end.
“Vic.”
Victoria sat.
Arthur stood across from her desk.
Neither spoke.
Daniel continued.
“If Charles is in custody, you won.”
Victoria almost laughed.
Not yet.
Daniel smiled faintly.
“Except there’s one thing I never proved.”
Her fingers tightened.
“Charles did not create the first Vance settlement.”
Arthur closed his eyes.
Daniel held up a document.
“He inherited it.”
Then another.
“The architecture came earlier.”
Victoria looked at Arthur.
He whispered, “I told you I signed.”
Daniel continued.
“Before Arthur became a judge, he helped structure the confidentiality agreement.”
Arthur’s shoulders dropped.
“I did.”
Daniel’s voice:
“I believed Arthur when he said he regretted it.”
Victoria stared.
Daniel looked directly into the camera.
“You’ll have to decide whether I was right.”
The video paused.
Then resumed.
“Do not confuse guilt with guiltiness.”
Arthur looked at Victoria.
Daniel continued.
“Arthur signed the settlement. Charles weaponized it later.”
Victoria breathed again.
Barely.
Then Daniel lifted another page.
“But Arthur kept one thing from me.”
Arthur went white.
Victoria noticed.
Daniel said:
“The original Vance file contains a witness statement from Evelyn.”
Victoria frowned.
Evelyn?
Arthur whispered, “No.”
Daniel continued.
“She saw who ordered the illegal dumping.”
Victoria’s pulse rose.
Charles?
No.
Too easy.
“Arthur told me the statement was missing.”
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“It wasn’t.”
Victoria looked at Arthur.
“Where is it?”
He said nothing.
Daniel’s video ended.
Silence.
Victoria stood.
Arthur closed his eyes.
“Vic.”
“Where is it?”
He walked to his briefcase.
Opened it.
Removed a thin yellow envelope.
Original Vance file.
Witness statement.
EVELYN VANCE.
Victoria took it.
Hands steady now.
She opened it.
Evelyn’s handwriting.
I SAW THE ORDER.
The next line:
CHARLES OBJECTED.
Victoria stopped.
Arthur looked away.
She kept reading.
THE PERSON WHO INSISTED THE DRUMS BE BURIED WAS—
The page ended.
Torn.
Victoria looked at Arthur.
“Where is the rest?”
He whispered:
“I never had it.”
A knock sounded.
Evelyn entered.
No cane this time.
Just an envelope.
She looked at Arthur.
Then Victoria.
“I have the rest.”
Victoria’s throat tightened.
Evelyn placed the missing half on the desk.
The lines matched.
Victoria read the name.
Her breath stopped.
Not Charles.
Not Arthur.
A man Daniel had trusted.
A man whose name had appeared in the Harbor House donor list from the beginning.
Evelyn whispered:
“He built everything that came after.”
Victoria looked at the name again.
Then at Arthur.
“Why didn’t Daniel know?”
Arthur’s face drained.
Because the signature belonged to someone who had supposedly died twenty-nine years earlier.
Daniel Harrington’s father.
JAMES HARRINGTON.
Victoria stared.
Evelyn whispered:
“James never died.”
The office door opened behind them.
A man said:
“No.”
Victoria turned.
Gray hair.
Daniel’s eyes.
Same mouth.
Same voice shape.
Older.
Alive.
James Harrington stepped inside holding the missing original Vance file.
Then looked directly at Victoria.
May you like
“You buried the wrong man.”
CUT.
